I don`t see how any of these could combine for a transmitted mixing product on 5000. Since 5000 is 900 kHz down from 5900, that`s a red flag that it really is a receiver- produced image, even on two receivers; but what receivers, and are they 450 kHz IF, subject to such images?? Or possibly a punch up error on transmitter; somebody hit a 0 instead of a 9. But was it on the air on 5900 too? Did you not check that?? New log (Bruce Conti - Nashua NH, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Hi Bruce, Yes, I thought that was a strange one, altho I recall years ago DR bc stations did have numbers in their calls, at least some of them. But I see currently in the WRTH they are all-letters. What can you do if someone at station gives out wrong info? Maybe it was a provisional/experimental call until they got the final one. Of course you really can`t tell if they are saying HISB or HISV. 73, (Glenn to Bruce, via DXLD) Thank you for listening and confirming that it's not HIC82. My educated guess based on "senda de vida" is HISV. (The letter V in Caribbean Spanish often sounds like a B, and V is pronounced like a B sound in many words.) 73 (Bruce Conti - Nashua NH, Real DX yg via DXLD) The question for me is if the "HISV" call is the real one or it is a "self-made" call made to fit with its name or the HIC82 has been changed to HISV in the last days. INDOTEL, the people assigning the call signs, told me the following: ---------------------------------------------- Asunto: Indicativo Radio Senda 1680 Señor Molano: Esta emisora es el Ministerio Religioso Senda de Vida opera en San Pedro de Macorís, en la frecuencia 1680 KHz y su call sign es el HIC82. A few days ago I noted a problem from Moyabi on 15470 [you mean 15475? gh] at 1600 and 15355 at 1700. The transmitter first did not appear at all and then came on for a fraction of a second at a time during a couple of minutes before they finally were able to sign on correctly a couple of minutes into the program (after the TOH). I think Moyabi has a power supply problem as the frequency often starts swinging just before they sign off and during the first seconds after they sign on (Olle Alm, Sweden, wwdxc BC-DX Mar 26 via DXLD) As I have also noted when Afropop is closing down 17660 at 1530-1531 (gh, DXLD) ** GREECE. IRAQI AMATEUR RADIO SHUTDOWN CONTINUES http://www.arrl.org/news/stories/2007/03/30/102/?nc=1 NEWINGTON, CT, Mar 30, 2007 --- Iraq Amateur Radio Society (IARS) President Diya Sayah, YI1DZ, says a ham radio blackout in his country remains in effect, with no end in sight. As part of the new security plan in Baghdad, the Iraqi Ministry of Defense earlier this month requested that radio amateurs remain off the air until security improves. Because of a miscommunication, however, word failed to reach the Iraqi Communications and Media Commission, which still is issuing licenses. Sayah chalks up the open-ended ham radio blackout to a misunderstanding of Amateur Radio on the part of the defense minister. Working through the Ministry of Education and Scientific Research, the IARS has attempted --- so far without success --- to explain Amateur Radio to the Ministry of Defense. ``Because it`s between ministries, this will take time also,`` Sayah said this week, adding that he was not optimistic about meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki anytime soon. ``Now anyone on the air is a pirate, as everyone is obliged not to use their radios at the present time,`` he added. He said IARS members continue making contacts using Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) modes such as IRLP, EchoLink and others. The Ministry of Defense also had asked the IARS to store all licensees` ham radio equipment during the shutdown, but Sayah says that`s not happening because of the dangerous situation that persists within the capital. The ham radio shutdown affects non-Iraqi licensees, including members of the military and contractors holding YI9-prefix call signs. It does not apply to Military Affiliate Radio System (MARS) operations, which use military frequencies. Copyright © 2007, American Radio Relay League, Inc. Today in Dublin, Eamon Cooke, ex-boss of Radio Dublin, and indeed a man who brought shame on the name of Radio Dublin, was given a jail sentence of 42 years, although recommended to serve 10. If he made 42 years it would be a miracle. Cooke is 70. This was in relation to sexual scandals which date back to the 70s and back in 1978, when Radio Dublin split to form BIG D, the allegations were there at that time. I guess the Dublin newspapers on line will cover this in the morning. Radio Dublin were heard all over the world in the 80s on SW, various freqs 6317, 6220, but settled on 6910. The carrier on 5775 was already on at 1556, the religious programming they carried from 1600 was produced in Canada, perhaps Toronto, if I recall correct (I have to admit that I just did not pay attention). March 29, 2007 by Victor Kaonga http://ndagha.blogspot.com/2007/03/trans-world-radio-africa-finally-online.html Allow me to blow my own trumpet agreeing with a local saying 'fumbi ndiwe mwini' (if you keep quiet no one will tell the story). I have just discovered this afternoon that the international radio network I am part of, has started providing an audio stream. This is the first time Trans World Radio Africa has done this after 33 years of terrestrial broadcasts on shortwave, medium, fm and satelite. The stream coming off Johannesburg, South Africa means that some of its English programmes on satellite can now be accessed anywhere in the world. While I am part of a team in Malawi that transmits only on fm and shortwave, I am happy to see this development as it takes the regions network out put a step further. Trans World Radio was founded in 1954 by an evangelist Paul Freed and has been one of the leading Christian broadcasters world wide. Its long range transmissions cover many parts of the world. Trans World Radio broadcasts to more than 40 countries in Africa in more than 65 languages and dialects. In Malawi, it broadcasts on fm and shortwave to almost the whole country in English, Chichewa and Tumbuka. Though far away from the fm programmes, I can finally listen to some of the station's programmes here and right now. And on a lighter note, I can even hear my own voice here and there online... on the audio stream (via Mike Terry, dxldyg; also via Bruce Atchison, DXLD) Mentions that in Malawi broadcasts on shortwave. Has anyone actually confirmed that they indeed are on the air on SW, previously planned for on 4870 kHz? ERF (TWR German) to abandon MCR transmitters Evangeliums-Rundfunk, the German partner of Trans World Radio, will abandon the transmitters of Monte-Carlo Radiodiffusion in autumn of this year. The morning transmission on 1467 will cease by the end of September, the shortwave transmissions by the end of October (presumably Oct 28), see the enclosed message. This is no surprise, ERF announced already a while ago that this would happen one day. In fact some people here at Elsterwerda are indeed regular ERF listeners, and they put pressure on the operator of our cable net (a local company, no Kabel Deutschland here) to offer ERF as well. One of the engineers of this local company was just stunned when I told him about ERF's big 700 kW mediumwave transmitter at Mainflingen. He had never heard of 1539 before, and he is indeed interested in radio. So who should listen to additional, scattered shortwave transmissions anymore? The only other TWR transmission via MCR's shortwave transmitter besides the ERF programs is English in the morning on 9800. To answer Ed Stone's question about Rob Greene in DXLD 7-040: When he retired, Rob expressed an interest in starting a personal blog. But because anything he wrote would no longer be under the editorial control of Radio Netherlands, this would have to be a private venture. I offered to help Rob with the setting up of a blog if that's what he wanted to do. He said he would think about it. In the meantime, he has adopted a new lifestyle and spends the winter in Spain, and the summer here in the Netherlands. He probably also spends quite a bit of time in Scotland, where his wife comes from. Last summer, Rob E-mailed me and said he was interested in starting something. I replied and confirmed I was willing to assist him. He said he would get back to me, but I never heard any more. So the ball's in his court (sorry for the analogy to silly round things, Glenn). And the remark about 1008 was an allusion to the Flevo-Zeewolde transmitter which was widely expected to go dark last night at 2200 because it had been reported than Radio 10 Gold will abandon mediumwave in/from April. But this did not happen, 1008 is still on (as of April 1st at 1730), and at least last night they even still promoted the AM outlet with trailers for ``volle kracht op AM 1008`` etc. So it remains to be seen how the story of Radio 10 Gold will continue. Re: 7-040. DANGEROUS ULTRA-NATIONALIST GROUP THREATENS RADIO Reporters Without Borders today condemned the death threats made yesterday against the employees of Istanbul-based Ozgur Radyo and called on the government to take the safety of journalists more seriously. “In the light of previous tragic events in Turkey, especially the murder of newspaper editor Hrant Dink, it is vital that the authorities take measures to protect Ozgur Radyo’s staff,” the organisation said. Yesterday’s threats were made by the Turkish Vengeance Brigade (TIT) in the form of an email that reached the “Investigation” section of the station’s website http://ozgurradyo.com and contained direct death threats against the station’s staff. “Stop broadcasting separatist programmes,” the email said. “We are watching you and we know where your homes are. This message is our last warning. The Turk has reawakened and the Turk’s rage will annihilate those who aim to divide the motherland. If you do not stop betraying Turkey, your end will be the same as the others. Your destiny will be the same as that of the other traitors.” . . . At 1656 there was already no carrier on 7530 anymore, so they switched the transmitter off rather early if really using this frequency. On March 25 at 2300 they were definitely on 7510, so the info about a frequency switch at 2100 is certainly the correct one. At the same time I found 7440 much weaker, indicating that it was skipping over me, so this is apparently Krasne and not ``SMF``, also when taking aside any nitpicking about the Kopani/Luch transmitters being located 300 km away from Simferopol. According to the BBCWS website the first time slot is 1100 to 1300 UT on 9660 and 9480 and not 1100 to 1200 UT (Bernie O'Shea, Ont., April 1, DX LISTENING DIGEST) However, when I originally copied it, the page http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/schedules/internet/800/radio_frequencies_caribbean.shtml did show 1100-1200 only, but now has changed to -1300. And the versions above also show 1100-1300, broken up into segments (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Hi, Glenn -- Re: BBC item in DXLD 7-040, the BBC morning service to the Caribbean is still 11-13 UT, both hours on 9480 (GUF) and 9660 (WHRI.) Re DXing with Cumbre: ``Does anyone know the present status of this program?`` I listen every week, and, though Marie was sick recently and a couple recent weeks were repeats, it is on regularly. Check gh's "DX Programs" list for the times and frequencies; it's been pretty accurate for me here in the Central US, though some of the transmissions indicated as being for "Americas" are much weaker than some indicated as being for other target areas overseas. Beware that many seem to start about 3 minutes early, and that means you'd miss the show number and the "as of" date given only at the very beginning. (I've e-mailed Marie asking her to add a mention of the show number in the middle during the underwriting-acknowledgments segment and again at the end. Brahms` Lullaby with French lyrix playing at the unlikely hour of 1339 UT April 1 on 11970, i.e. WYFR, where it`s 6:39 am in Oakland and 9:39 am in Okeechobee; perhaps an April Fish joke (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** U S A [non]. CVC La Voz, via Chile 17680, confirmed continuing with its token ``arts`` program, Sunday April 1 at 1313 check playing ``Waltz of the Flowers`` which they would not be caught dead playing the other 167.5 hours per week of gospel/rap/crap. But they couldn`t stand to let it play all the way thru, faded down at 1317 to talk about the history of the waltz. O, what a waste. This powerful transmitter could be carrying cultural programming all the time. Checking the online schedule at http://www.cvclavoz.com/article/frontpage/49 we find that times are all wrong, with a 5-hour difference between Miami and UT, so that this is supposedly at 1400-1500 instead of 1300- 1400: ``El mundo del Arte con Marisol Popovitz``. Previous logs of this also showed it ending at the half hour rather than a full hour, but did not reconfirm that now. At this early hour with disturbed propagation conditions, even this usually super-signal was weak and fadey, but it was almost back up to par by an hour later. CVC Portuguese 15410 at 1318 was only fair to poor. Presumed this one with two men in Spanish, possibly joined briefly by a third man at 0144. Seemed soft music around 0148-0150, then little or nothing audible past 0200. Definitely music at 0209 recheck. Very, very faint with annoying het from 9620 only partially nulled. For East Coast DXers hoping to catch SODRE on 9620.4, the good news is that there's a window between 2200 (when DW s/off) and 2300 (when REE s/on). The bad news is that the signal, while present almost every day and completely in the clear, is pathetically weak and virtually unintelligible. I can hear voices and the cadence is definitely Spanish, but that's about it. More good news: It's also sometimes noted around 0145-0215 UT even through the REE powerhouse. More bad news: Most days, all that's noted is a het. Some days there's nothing. I've also been checking \\ 6125 kHz, but that channel is blocked. So if you enjoy a challenge ... The devil got mad! Sure Glenn, I was about to apologize with Alex on this. So please, Alex be kind with this erratic tico. Gosh! You can see how far human evil may reach, that some people can't see the poor man comfortable. It all began a couple of weeks back when, in fact, Alex Vranes reported hearing on 8989 USB some mentions of the Bible and prayers, and he was right in that didn't seem to be a regular broadcast. Then came Renato Bruni with his report on the same. I told them that for me was the first time a group of fishermen, that mostly belong to Caribbean Nicaragua, altho they now have brothers in Perú, Venezuela and even our Central Pacific port of Puntarenas, were talking about religious issues, so different of what I have heard them long ago cursing the bad fishing and things like that. So, recently they changed their vocabulary and behaving, trying now to follow the straight life, not harming anybody else. I was suspecting that day will come when someone will greet them with a carrier on that freauency and just happened this late afternoon of March, 2304, when they hardly can copy each other so they agreed to QSY to 8962 USB, but like a miracle this evil carrier didn't follow them there. Bottom line of this history: Sure, the devil got mad! As he became aware those oppressed men were walking in other direction, sent an earthly emissary from his Kingdom of Darkness to harass them. Well, fishermen should be aware if they get into that they would suffer persecution. Trials and tribulations, what else? Now, the word "cabrió" is past tense for "cabriar", a saying in Spanish when any living being got mad. The translation in English is for goat. So, that phrase could be "the devil got (or went) "goatered". Sometimes things like this may sound like Li`l Red Riding Hood or Heidi but in the spiritual reign a battle is going on, minute by minute. 73s (Raúl Saavedra, Costa Rica, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) Raúl, Yes, I supposed it had something to do with goats. I wonder how you can be sure that the very same individual fishermen who used bad language on the air are now these guys? I`ll bet there are still plenty of foul-mouthed fishermen using their radios. Do you recognize the same voices or names previously heard on 8989? 73, (Glenn to Raúl, via DXLD) Not necessarily the same people cause up till now they [don`t?] mention their names, but is the same part of the SW spectrum, and one thing hardly missing is the "nica" accent in most of them (Raúl Saavedra, Costa Rica, ibid.) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ UNSOLICITED TESTIMONIALS ++++++++++++++++++++++++ Listen to you regularly, usually over the Internet, and you seem to have been there for all my some 33 years of radio listening. We’re taking the weekend off, partly because we don’t want to get caught up in any 1st April hoaxes that may be perpetrated, and partly because it’s also a mild and sunny weekend here in the Netherlands. But those of you looking for radio-related humour can avail yourselves of the new, online version of BLANDX. Last published as a printed bulletin in 1994, BLANDX describes itself as a “DX Parody publication”. We especially like the feature “DX Psychiatric Disorders”, for example: African Hallucination: A rare disorder that causes one DXer to hear Guinea Bissau when others can’t. There’s also a review of the new Dracosonic R-65, the first DX-quality radio designed especially with the 65-and-over DXers in mind. If you remember BLANDX from its print days, you’ll know what to expect. Even if you don’t, take your sense of humour to http://www.blandx.com and you’ll enjoy it. And the people behind BLANDX are inviting contributions for the next edition which they hope to produce in June or July.
