I note that you have contact with Drita, from Radio Tirana. In a Chilean newspaper, remembering Pinochet's dictatorship, a journalist said that, strangely, the radio that arrived better to Chile during the first Pinochet's years (there were many shortwave broadcasts directed to Chile, especially from communist countries) was Radio Tirana! I am very interested in know when they broadcast to Chile (now they don't have a Spanish Department) and who broadcasted these programmes, if exiled Chileans (they were everywhere, even in Mozambique... but in Albania?) or Radio Tirana itself. Could you ask Drita for that? (I study History, by this; I have strange questions as this.) Thank you very much, and happy 2007 (Eduardo Esteban Peñailillo Barra, Santiago, Chile, Jan 3, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Dear Drita, I wish you belatedly, a very happy, healthy and successful New Year. I am very pleased to make your acquaintance during 2006 and I look forward to further contacts with you in 2007. Radio Tirana's English programme is heard with good signal at 1945 UT on 7465 SINPO 44444. The "Polisario Front" station broadcasting to Western Sahara has moved back to 7460 kHz in the evening (20 kilowatts only) but with a fairly good signal here. Interference to Radio Tirana is only slight. Unfortunately, the "hum" and sometimes low audio level is still a problem with this frequency. 6170 at 1845 has SINPO 33443 still with strong interference from Croatia on 6165 and Russia/Japan via UK both on 6175. No "hum" noted on this frequency. I was very pleased to hear the nice programme that the producers had prepared for the New Year - a mixture of light music. I was surprised to hear another version of Radio Tirana's "signing on" melody among them. All my best, (Alan Holder, Isle of Wight, UK, via Drita Çiço, R. Recibido e-mail QSL en 8 meses. V/S Omar Flores. For almost two weeks, CFCY has been silent on 630 kHz, except for a 10,000 watt open carrier. CFCY-AM was required to surrender its license following a 3 months simulcast transition period resulting from its flip to CFCY-FM. Which makes me wonder - is it now a 10 kW pirate station with an open carrier? I haven't checked the Broadcast Act yet. I guess someone forgot to shut down the transmitter. Things like that could happen over the Christmas holidays, I suppose. Even with a 10 kW Nautel, this still costs some bucks for electricity. Maybe they will remember to shut it off when they get their bill from Maritime Electric. A ham friend of mine - who is into DXing 160M [I'm not - don't have the room for the antenna!] mentioned to me a couple days ago that he noticed an odd signal on 1890 kHz. It was only present on some of his rigs. Didn't take a rocket scientist to figure the source of the problem. He was pretty bugged by it and said he was going to contact the CRTC. Since it wasn't bothering the X-Band, I didn't get too excited. I was able to reproduce the 1890 problem on my Drake R8 but not on my Kenwood TS-520SE or the R-390A, R-392, RX-321, HQ-129-X. But, tune in 630 kHz and the open carrier is very, very strong. So, I don't think its someone with an Alfredo Lite! Funny thing is, I can still DX under CFCY-AM's carrier. Its handy for doing nulling practice with the Quantum loop and phaser (Phil Rafuse, PEI, Jan 3, ABDX via DXLD) ** CANADA. Canada Says ``OK`` to HD Radio The Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has revised its policy to allow HD Radio to enter Canada’s digital radio broadcasting arena. Using the HD Radio technology, existing AM and FM stations can broadcast digital signals along with the analog, providing multiple channels of programming on the same frequency, known as “multicasting”. In addition to allowing for programming expansion via these multicasts, the technology’s developer, iBiquity Digital Corp., says that HD Radio provides improved sound quality over analog service. It can also allow for other neat options, like scrolling text and graphics content on the display of a receiver; and real-time traffic updates. HD Radio’s in-channel, on-band (IBOC) system is already available to approximately 80 per cent of the U.S. population through more than 1,100 AM and FM radio stations; and receivers are available from about 20 manufacturers. In its Public Notice CRTC 2006-160, the Commission said it would be prepared to authorize services using the IBOC/HD Radio technology for the AM and FM bands if the Canadian department of Industry authorizes it under the Radiocommunication Act. The CRTC added that ``an expedited process would be adopted for stations that propose to transmit a digital simulcast of their analog service.`` ``The HD Radio system is ideal for Canadian broadcasters and listeners, allowing stations to offer more than one programming stream without the need for more or different spectrum,`` said Robert Struble, President and CEO of iBiquity Digital. ``Programmers will be able to offer their content in both French and English, as well as create new channels for Canada’s diverse population. We welcome this decision by the CRTC, and we look forward to the opportunity to assist Canadian AM and FM broadcasters with their digital conversions. ``The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) began HD Radio testing in September 2006, focusing on transmissions from Toronto and Peterborough, Ontario,`` Struble added. ``Full results have not yet been published by the CBC, but early feedback has been very positive. There are plans to begin testing on MW-AM operations in early 2007.`` Since HD Radio does not require an additional spectrum, the transition would likely be seamless for providers, should they opt to participate in the technology. HD Radio technology is currently being tested and adopted in more than a dozen countries throughout the world, including: Australia, France, Indonesia, Mexico, New Zealand, Philippines, Poland, Switzerland, Thailand and Ukraine. Re Viva Miami: Yes, I don't blame you for wanting to steer clear of the stingrays. The ones at Stingray City are apparently "domesticated" and I don't think they've ever hurt anyone. I would have probably gone there myself, but Thaïs was afraid to do it, so we didn't bother. I have been swimming with stingrays in the past at St. Petersburg Beach, where suddenly a school of hundreds of them (smaller than the Cayman variety) come right at you, with no possibility of escaping. It's a bit unnerving, but it's amazing how they go right around you without touching you at a very high rate of speed. The only problem is that occasionally they imbed themselves in the sand, and if you step on one of them accidentally they can sting you, and I'm told it's quite painful. Thus the signs on the beach tell you during the stingray season (I'm not sure exactly when that is) to "do the stingray shuffle" by shuffling your feet back and forth when you walk in shallow water, which presumably scares them away before you step on them. If you truly are "your host here in Havana, now ready to bring you short wave radio's most comprehensive radio hobby program. Then why is it that Cuban radio stations (non RHC) do not issue individually specific QSL cards, since these stations are heard all over North America? I have seen QSL cards that were issued up to the end of the 1950's, however none after that. Why not? And if you are the "pro" so to speak over there in Cuba, what influence do you really have to suggest to begin to do so. Isn't there a radio club in all of Havana that can handle such a task? Or how about yourself as the central point of contact - now wouldn't that make great reporting on your weekly programs (as spokesperson for all reception reports for all Cuban radio verifications)? Atentamente. RADIO PRAGUE ISSUES NEW SERIES OF QSL CARDS FOR 2007 --- 2 January 2007, By Pavla Horakova, Radio Prague http://www.radio.cz/en/article/86800 (photos on site) As we do every year, Radio Prague has issued a brand new series of QSL cards to be sent out to our listeners in exchange for their reception reports. Some of you probably received the special QSL card we issued last year for the 70th anniversary of Radio Prague, and many of you have the complete collections from recent years or going even further back. But not all of our listeners may be familiar with the term "QSL card". Earlier I spoke to the director of Radio Prague, Miroslav Krupicka, and asked him to explain what QSL cards are and what they feature this year. "Well, 'QSL' is an abbreviation from the international telegraphy. It basically means 'reception confirmed' or 'contact confirmed'. Overall, QSL cards are used as a tool to let the listeners, or the audience, know that we have received their report or letter. It is the reports that especially the DX listeners write to us to let us know how the Radio Prague signal is heard all over the world." Every year, Radio Prague issues a series of these cards. How many are there and what is the topic this year? "Well, Radio Prague usually issues a series of eight different pictures, always with one topic. Some radios issue just one card, one picture, some issue three, most radios, I would say issue eight. That's the case of Radio Prague, too. Every summer, myself, the editor-in-chief of Radio Prague and the secretaries sit down and discuss the topic for the next year. And last year we selected observation towers, Czech observation towers. "Czech, or formally, Czechoslovak watchtowers are very nice pieces of architecture, so we thought the audience might appreciate that and also we tried to demonstrate these places or monuments of the Czech Republic and tell our listeners, hey, they are very nice places to visit, if you happen to come to the Czech Republic it might be interesting for you to visit these places and enjoy them." Those of you who have visited Prague may also have climbed the Petrin Lookout Tower, the sort-of miniature Eiffel Tower on a hill not far from Prague Castle. This tower, too, features on Radio Prague's QSL cards this year. So please keep those reception reports coming and we'll be happy to send you our brand new collection of QSL cards in return. Dear Glenn, I have an interesting logging of Danish Broadcasting's medium wave transmitter on 1062 kHz from Kalundborg. As we all know, the Kalundborg site was due to close on New Year's Eve 2006. Monitoring 1062 kHz at 2300 UT on 31st December I noticed some sort of New Year celebration transmission including hymns, presumably in Danish, followed by a news bulletin, followed by the P3/P4 night programme, which was transmitted right through the night. The transmitter was still on air on New Year's Day and it is still in operation now on the evening of Wednesday 3rd January at 1750 UT, putting out a nice clear signal (55555 on the Sony Hi-Fi) with their nice rounded valve type easy-on-the-ear sound characteristic of Kalundborg 1062. There also appears to be a frequency announcement after the 1700 navigational warning specific to 1062 kHz at approximately 1715 UT (I cross checked with 243 kHz and they were putting out P1 as normal). The announcement lasted about 5 minutes. I assume this is a "we're leaving AM soon, please re-tune to FM" announcement, but, if this is so, why is it not carried on 243 kHz? (This announcement was also present on 1062 kHz at the same time the previous day.) What is the position on the Kalundborg site at the moment? I hope someone will tell me that DR have decided to continue broadcasting on 1062 kHz. P3 is indeed an excellent program to listen to! (Darren Rozier - Sony LBT-N200 Compact Hi-Fi Stereo system with AM loop antenna and Roberts R9914 with internal ferrite rod aerial. DX location: Stowmarket, Suffolk, England, Jan 3, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Hi Glenn, A couple of hours ago it was made official that DR will continue on 1062 kHz in the period January 1st 2007 - December 31st 2010. However we still don't know (officially) which programmes will be offered on 1062 and the broadcasting hours. It is however likely that operations will be limited to weather forecasts, newscasts etc. Long wave 243 kHz from Kalundborg will cease operations. I am writing an article about the situation for radionyt.com but I am awaiting more details from the head of DR Radio. Hopefully he'll get back later tonight or early tomorrow morning. Best 73s (Stig Hartvig Nielsen, Denmark, Jan 3, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Now the article is online at http://www.radionyt.com Here's a quick version in English. LONG WAVE STATION IN KALUNDBORG TO BE CLOSED - MEDIUM WAVE WILL CONTINUE Initially DR (Danish Broadcasting Corporation) wanted to close down both the medium wave and the long wave transmitters in Kalundborg operating on 243 and 1062 kHz by the end of 2006. But the Danish Ministry of Culture has decided that DR must continue using medium wave till at least December 31, 2010. It is however uncertain which programmes will be carried on 1062 in the future. Director of DR Radio, Leif Lønsmann, says to radionyt.com, that DR is going to air navigational warnings, weather forecasts and possibly newscasts on medium wave - but no final decision on this has been taken yet. The switch off of the long wave station in Kalundborg is expected sometime during the spring of 2006. Best 73s (Stig Hartvig Nielsen, Denmark, Jan 4, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Danmarks Radio is required to keep 1062 on air at least until yearend 2010. But they are allowed to switch off 243 and are expected to do so during spring: http://blogs.rnw.nl/medianetwork/?p=6961 At present the navigational warnings and sea weather forecasts mentioned herein go out on 243. Not only the buzz disappeared, also RTG on 4777 at 1600-1700 is missing since the beginning of this year. I've the impression that Moyabi has only two fully working transmitters at the moment (Thorsten Hallmann, Münster, Germany, DX LISTENING DIGEST) See also LIBYA [non] ** GERMANY. Anyone know what happened to the R. Berlin International announcers? A few names I recall: June Jones and Rudi Freedle (spelling?). I've heard similar sounding voices, under different names, from other broadcasters. Anyone know? 73, (Kraig, KG4LAC Krist, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) From the Spanish section of that radio, announcer Marcelo Fortin went to Radio Nederland Wereldomroep Latin American programs in 1982, and is currently one of their news readers and translator. Also musician and piano player and composer. Was part of the Chilean folk music group Aparcoa. 73 (Horacio Nigro, Uruguay, ibid.) From the German Service Manfred Böhm > Deutsche Welle Wolfram Heß > DeutschlandRadio Kultur (Peter Kruse, Germany, ibid.) Wolfram still co-hosts the monthly DX show on DW. Which reminds me, this week should be the time to download it before it goes away, almost 42 minutes into the long Mailbag file on demand for 1 Jan = really 31 Dec. Not exactly a full-time job. I think they mentioned another website where the DX meetings are archived indefinitely. ``Freedle`` above probably spelt Friedl. 73, (Glenn, ibid.) Yes, and they produce the show at Voltastraße in Berlin, the seat of DW's TV branch where also some modest radio production possibilities exist (rather a correspondent office than real studios). Otherwise Wolfram does various freelance work, a little bit for Deutschlandradio, something in video production and so on. Manfred Böhm worked after the close-down of RBI first for Radioropa which started broadcasting just when RBI died, on Oct 3 1990. This station might be known also in the "AM scene" for its transmissions on 261 (until 2000) and 5975/5980 (1993-1995, via Litomysl). When Radioropa declined Manfred got the opportunity to work for DW's German service where he can be heard frequently now. That's all I can say about former RBI staff, except from a remark that it can be told easily what happened to them: They were simply fired. It was apparently not uncommon for foreign staff members to appear under pseudonym, so it could indeed be possible that some of them are heard under other names elsewhere now (Kai Ludwig, Germany, ibid.) Hello Folks, as a member of RBI's DX club and a listener for the Arabic section of RBI in late 80s, I used to enjoy very much the DX programs of RBI. I was taught ABC of DXing by listening to them. I ended up with lots of special QSL cards, books and mags in Arabic talking about Heaven on Earth !! DDR. I always remember an announcer who used to speak Arabic with a German accent ;) his name was Joachim Schneider (Pardon my spelling). I used to send all my letters to RBI's Arabic section with his name. Listening to DW's Arabic section a few years back I could hear a guy almost with the same voice --- but with a different name!!! the Idea of sending DW a letter to double check the issue crossed my mind, but never did it. So I wonder, what really happened to my friend, Joachim Schneider? All the best, guys (Tarek Zeidan, Cairo, Egypt, ibid.) Tarek, Greetings from another RBI DX Club member. 73, (Kraig, KG4LAC, Krist, VA, ibid.) If it was indeed the same person it would still be the question which name was a pseudonym, "Joachim Schneider" (the spelling is correct) or the one used on DW? I will ask around if somebody knows something about him. No chance with Google; way too much hits also when adding suitable keywords. Also to mention here: Hannelore Steer of RBI's Africa service (I heard about Swahili as language in particular). In early 1990 she became editor-in-chief of RBI, and today she is director of radio at Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg. http://www.rbb-online.de/_/unternehmen/beitrag_jsp/key=4542698.html (Kai Ludwig, Germany, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** GERMANY [non]. My first impressions of the DWL change to Merlin [VTC U.K. wb.] after one day is that signals are not as strong here as when Wertachtal was being used, but it maybe that shortwave conditions are to blame. For instance 9545 kHz at 0600-1000 UT. While the signal strength meter registered about the same levels as previously, the same "weight" was not there and the signal seemed to begin fading earlier after 0900 UT. Getting the sychronisation right on 6075 & 9545 must be a nightmare. Working out the time delays of the different programme circuits will be a problem, but I guess it will be solved soon. At present conditions are not good for reception from the South Asian area. I can barely hear DWL via Trincomalee on 11935 at 2045 and All India Radio on 11620 & 11715 is not there at all. So maybe my first thoughts about the DWL changes are premature. I had better observe for a few days more! (Barry Hartley, NZ, wwdxc BC-DX Jan 1 via DXLD) ** GERMANY. Following a summary of the T-Systems schedule changes as of January 1st, as shown in an updated sheet sent out today. Most are related to the end of DW transmissions via Wertachtal and the considerably stepped-up transmitter usage by DW at Nauen, but there are also the already reported new AWR services, replacing Al-Dhabbaya transmissions. Anything not mentioned herein continues unchanged, including all Wertachtal transmissions (except DW) as already pointed out. DUTCH MEDIUMWAVE STATIONS NOW ALLOWED TO USE DRM The Radiocommunications Agency Netherlands has announced that holders of mediumwave licences may now apply for a modification to the licence to allow them to use the Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) system. The Agency highlights three benefits of DRM over analogue: http://blogs.rnw.nl/medianetwork/?p=6941 (Andy Sennitt, Media Network blog Jan 3 via DXLD) I can't see the attraction of "single channel simulcasting" . The only single channel simulcast mode DRM has tested so far is running on 693 Voice of Russia Orianeburg, the DRM quality is reportedly worse than AM, you get digital noise on the AM signal and the DRM is difficult to decode. http://www.drmrx.org/forum/showthread.php?t=927&page=3&highlight=russia I queried this on the DRM-L group a year back and was told it's very difficult to do as a single channel simulcast requires only a SSB (LSB) analogue signal (4.5 or 5kHz wide sideband) plus carrier and a narrow 4.5 or 5 kHz DRM block on the high side of the carrier. There is a single channel simulcast mode mentioned as under development at the DRM site which is 10 kHz DRM, 5 kHz AM, 15 kHz bandwidth but in effect that is still occupying two channels and who on earth wants to listen to music at 5 khz AM bandwidth? http://www.drm.org/broadcastmanual/summarytable2.php To adapt this for Europe it would need to be 9 kHz DRM, 4.5 kHz AM presumably and you would need agreement from whoever is occupying the adjacent channel, which may or may not be forthcoming, and which would have to be on a non interference basis. I can't see the point (Mike Barraclough, BDXC-UK via DXLD) Funny you should mention that, Mike, as I was just discussing that very thing yesterday with a colleague who was closely involved in the work that led to the adoption of the DRM standard. Basically, he said what you said - there is a degradation of the AM quality in this mode, unless you use two channels. I don’t know how feasible that is in the Netherlands. He was formerly the head of the press section in the Polish Embassy in London (Jonathan Murphy, Ireland, World DX Club via Mike Barraclough, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Announcement is 30 minutes in during the Tuesday programme here: http://www.polskieradio.pl/polonia/audio.asp?rId=10 (Barraclough, ibid.) Hi Glenn, I must confess the ID did sound like Polish Radio to me, but due to the strong het there I was not positive, so I convinced myself I must be wrong. Sorry for the confusion. BTW - a re-check of 9525, at 1414 (Jan 3) found a strong het/open carrier with no audio. VOI with more transmitter problems or what? (Ron Howard, ibid.) The name Radio Polonia had already been used in the era until 1989. After all the recent developments at Polskie Radio I would not be surprised if this is the very reason why this name disappears now. By the way, one hears from Warsaw about a principal intention to "rejuvenate" the foreign service. So probably more staff will have to go (Kai Ludwig, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) I listened to the media show; they alluded to but did not mention by name R. Warsaw, as perhaps the next step; apparently that has negative connotations associated with the ancien régime (Glenn Hauser, DXLD) ** POLAND [non]. On an E1 radio receiver: 1900 UT. Set the E1 Radio to 5935 channel, 2.3 kHz filter used. Could detect R Polonia's IS and ID, and then started ESPERANTO service on this new RUS/CIS directed channel. But 100% not Russian or Ukrainian service transmission here on this DTK Wertachtal channel. So, my conclusion: step 1 - DTK ceased Esperanto language booked frequencies on Dec 31. step 2 - DTK provide new additional channels now, as from Jan 1 or 3: 6035 1600-1630 29S 220/01 75 146 1234567 010107 250307 WER 100 PRW 7170 1600-1629 29S 223 75 208 1234567 010107 250307 WER 100 PRW 5935 1900-1930 29S 102 75 201 1234567 010107 250307 WER 100 PRW step 3 - Either R Polonia didn't tell DTK the new satellite transponder subcarrier, or DTK switched to the wrong RP's Russian service transponder (Wolfgang Büschel, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Just checked the new 5935 1900-1930 via Wertachtal which replaced 7290 from Nauen: It carried --- Esperanto! Unless there is any other language which sounds somehow like a mixture of Portuguese and Italian etc., with a frequently appearing word "kaj". At the same time 6095 had Russian as scheduled, overriding the co-channel DRM from Junglinster here. Carrier on 5935 off at 1929 when after a music bridge an apparent closing announcement had just started. Also checked 7290: There was some faint signal, impossible to identify but most likely not // either 5935 or 6095, so presumably something unrelated but no longer Nauen. Possible scenario: Esperanto is still played out at the usual times and fed on the audio distribution platform of Polskie Radio (Eutelsat W3A), either as feed to somewhere or just because they forgot to terminate this playout so far. At the same time the slots previously used for Esperanto on T-Systems transmitters were modified, presumably for additional transmissions in Russian (at least this would fit with the 75 degree beam heading, 1900-1930 in // to 6095, 1600-1630 for a release of Russian that went out only via Hotbird so far), but they did not specify that the audio channel has to be changed as well. One has really to wonder what's going on at Polskie Radio? (Kai Ludwig, Germany, Jan 4, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** PORTUGAL [and non]. 783 kHz, R. Now, I can't really actually state this was Avanca, but at that time, that strong, that bearing, it should be Avanca testing again. [Later]: I finally made up my mind about enquiring the station once again, and it seems I was lucky this time...read on. It seems the item above is not confirmed after all. According to the station (I had to call the northern office in Porto which is where the technical dept. is located), the launch of the Avanca site was again postponed due to extensive operations re. sister stationn R. It was noted other times too. R. Nacional, 1035 kHz, 100 kW, Belmonte --- This was also discussed: it's said to be at just half the nominal power, and they regret that so many technical problems is causing this site to be off the air so often (Carlos Gonçalves, SW coast of Portugal, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** PUERTO RICO. 1480, TROPICAL 14-80. Interior Minister Hussein Aideed transfered Radio Mogadishu to Sahra Abdiqadir, the Somali government's state minister for information. Minister Aideed said his supporters protected Radio Mogadishu during the civil war years and now willingly transfered the radio station to the interim government. Aideed said Radio Mogadishu would now function as the government's mouthpiece and the name will be changed to the Voice of the Somali Republic. We recently received a gift towards building a regional band shortwave station in Uganda that will reach over 100m people in Uganda, Southern Sudan and parts of Kenya, Tanzania and Rwanda. Now, we have miraculously been given the first ever shortwave radio licence to be granted to a non- government body by the Ugandan authorities. We believe this licence has been granted through God's grace as a result of the partnership with Prayer Palace Christian Ministries and the work with the orphanage. God has used those prayers for Vietnam three years ago not only to bring a signal to that land, but also to use the testimony of forgiveness of a war victim to bring help to another nation where over 1.5 million people were slaughtered under the reign of two successive despots, a nation that in turn has now granted us a radio licence to reach the whole country and those around it with the Gospel of Jesus Christ." http://www.biblevoice.org/uploads/UKnews0510web.pdf and http://www.biblevoice.org/uploads/UKnews0503web.pdf (Jerry Berg-USA, DXplorer Dec 31 via BCDX via DXLD) ** UGANDA. 4976, R. Allard of CO said he was introducing legislation to move two southern Colorado counties, one of them La Plata, from the Albuquerque to the Denver TV market as defined by Arbitron. Seems the residents would rather watch TV stations from their own state than a neighboring one. {Why is this a federal government concern?} He didn`t explain, but this dates back to the early days of TV when because of those danged 14-kilofoot mountains in CO, it was not possible to pick up the Denver stations off the air, but Albuquerque from the much higher site Sandia Crest to the south had no problem getting across the border, helped along by numerous translators. For a long time now it should be easy to get Denver TV into La Plata by satellite and I`d be surprised if the cable systems there don`t have Denver on them, perhaps in addition to Albuquerque or instead of, depending on the network and the off-air reception. These changes have been incorporated into the EiBi schedules dated January 4. Furthermore, due to many requests a TIME-SORTED version is also available, finally. It is as comfortable to use as it used to be in past seasons, but I guess it should be ok in most cases. Good DX and a happy new year! (gh) DIGITAL BROADCASTING ++++++++++++++++++++ Maybe there's hope after all (IBOC) http://www.rwonline.com/pages/s.0044/t.557.html Interesting article. Maybe the reality of this bad idea is finally starting to sink in (Russ Johnson, Lexington NC, NRC-AM via DXLD) Russ, Isn't DRM as noisy as IBOC? Seems to me when I have heard it on SW, I do get hash on the sidebands too. Hopefully all of this digital racket will leave the AM band in time. Thanks for the link. 73, (Patrick Martin, OR, ibid.) Patrick: If properly adjusted (and that IS a must) then the DRM signal is every bit as narrow as normal transmissions, using only +/- 4500 Hz (for shortwave). At +/- 5000 Hz and beyond the sidebands are in the noise. If the transmitter is NOT properly adjusted then the signal can have what sounds like white noise in a band that can extend dozens of kHz either side of carrier. That is NOT the norm. And you are not the only one that has heard such interference from a misadjusted transmitter. "Unfortunately" the DRM signal is not compatible with the usual AM receiver. Tune it in and you hear "white noise." It`s all or nothing, rather like AM or FM (Jim Tonne, Oak Ridge TN, ibid.) IBOC: See also CANADA DRM: See also MALI; NETHERLANDS; POLAND COMMENTARY: FIRST LISTEN --- RADIOSHACK`S $99 HD RADIO --- by Sean Ross, 01.03.2007 VP of Music and Programming, Edison Media Research I was ready to buy an HD Radio receiver about six months ago, shortly after an industry-wide offer went out making a Boston Acoustics radio available for about $200. I decided to wait after a friend familiar with the receiver warned me off. Wait for a radio with improved reception, I was told. In Somerville, N.J., 50 miles from New York and 60 from Philadelphia, I wouldn`t be able to pick up the HD signals of FM stations in either market or their multicast channels. So I waited. When word went out that RadioShack was going to be selling its Accurian tabletop HD Radio for $99 on the Friday after Thanksgiving, I e-mailed my contact again. This time, I was told I could count on receiving at least the New York stations with the antenna that was provided with the radio. . . http://www.rwonline.com/pages/s.0044/t.565.html (via Kevin Redding, ABDX via DXLD) PROPAGATION +++++++++++ The geomagnetic field ranged from quiet to unsettled levels at all latitudes. The period started with the solar wind speed elevated around 600 km/s as a coronal hole high speed stream was moving out of geoeffective position. Quiet to unsettled conditions were observed at all latitudes on 25 December. Solar wind speed continued to decrease to around 320 km/s early on 29 December with the IMF Bz variable between +/- 3 nT. The geomagnetic field was quiet during this time. A solar sector boundary crossing was observed early on 29 December followed by a brief increase in solar wind speed to around 380 km/s. Thereafter solar wind speed was in decline to a low around 290 km/s by midday on 31 December. The IMF Bz continued to not vary much beyond +/- 3 nT. The geomagnetic field was quiet for the rest of the period. FORECAST OF SOLAR AND GEOMAGNETIC ACTIVITY 03 - 29 JANUARY 2007 Solar activity is expected to be at very low to low levels. There is a slight chance for moderate level activity until 12 January when Region 933 departs the visible disk. There is a slight chance for a proton event until Region 933 departs the visible disk on 12 January. No proton events are expected during the rest of the period. The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at high levels during 03 – 28 January. The geomagnetic field is expected to range from quiet to minor storm conditions. Recurrent coronal hole high-speed streams are forecast to disturb the field on 03 January and again on 16 - 19 January. Active to minor storm conditions are possible on 03 January. Unsettled to active conditions are possible on 16 – 19 January. Quiet to unsettled conditions are expected for the remainder of the period. :Product: 27-day Space Weather Outlook Table 27DO.txt :Issued: 2007 Jan 03 1954 UTC # Prepared by the US Dept. of Commerce, NOAA, Space Environment Center # Product description and SEC contact on the Web # http://www.sec.noaa.gov/wwire.html # # 27-day Space Weather Outlook Table # Issued 2007 Jan 02 # # UTC Radio Flux Planetary Largest # Date 10.7 cm A Index Kp Index 2007 Jan 03 90 25 5 2007 Jan 04 90 10 3 2007 Jan 05 90 10 3 2007 Jan 06 90 10 3 2007 Jan 07 90 10 3 2007 Jan 08 90 10 3 2007 Jan 09 90 8 3 2007 Jan 10 90 8 3 2007 Jan 11 90 5 2 2007 Jan 12 80 5 2 2007 Jan 13 75 5 2 2007 Jan 14 75 5 2 2007 Jan 15 75 10 3 2007 Jan 16 75 15 3 2007 Jan 17 75 15 3 2007 Jan 18 75 15 3 2007 Jan 19 75 15 3 2007 Jan 20 75 5 2 2007 Jan 21 75 5 2 2007 Jan 22 75 5 2 2007 Jan 23 75 5 2 2007 Jan 24 75 5 2 2007 Jan 25 75 5 2 2007 Jan 26 80 5 2 2007 Jan 27 85 5 2 2007 Jan 28 85 5 2 2007 Jan 29 85 15 3 (http://www.sec.noaa.gov/radio via DXLD) This week`s info was posted a day late because of holidays and could not be in WOR 1342 (gh) ###
