I meant to remind people on Monday, and on Tuesday, as I write it is not quite too late to try for LRA-36, Antarctica on 15476. Gabriel Iván Barrera reported last week that they were supposed to reactivate on April 17. April 18 at 2030, no carrier detectable, tho there is now nothing else audible between 15465 (weak carrier) and 15495 (Kuwait, much weaker as usual than // 15505), so a nice clear part of the band for a change. Conditions are pretty good with Kuwait, and also NZ 15720 coming in well, but not much from South America. Chile 15340 is there, but weak. Anyhow, if it`s not too late today, and certainly tomorrow onwards, look for LRA36 between 19 and 21, M-F, scheduled from 18- but I suppose that hour still collides with ANO Gabon. 73, (Glenn Hauser, OK, 2046 UT April 18, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) I forgot to check as well! Nothing at all heard here at 2050 on 15476 (Steve Lare, Holland, MI USA, April 18, ibid.) As they get into winter down there, especially at solar trough, 15 MHz may well not be propagating very long after sunset, so probably a better chance earlier at 19 (gh, WORLD OF RADIO 1312, DXLD) Solar-terrestrial indices for 18 April follow. Solar flux 74 and estimated mid-latitude A-Index 4. The mid-latitude K-index at 2100 UTC on 18 April was 0 (2 nT). No space weather storms were observed for the past 24 hours. (SEC via DXLD) No trace here of LRA36 on 15476 today at 2015 check. Propagation or just not reactivated yet? (Steve Lare, Holland, MI USA, April 19, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** AUSTRALIA. [CORRECTED below] Also visit http://www.abc.net.au/farnorth/ and then in a day or so on http://abc.net.au/darwin/ Craig Edwards, Nhulunbuy (Gove), Northern Territory, Australia nutritionandsports @ bigpond.com http://www.dxing.info/dxpeditions/nhulunbuy_2005_12.dx http://www.dxing.info/dxpeditions see Australia (April 18, HCDX via DXLD) Hi Craig and all, following Craig's entry about ABC Far North on 11650 kHz I tried the frequency at 0635 UT today Wednesday April 19, without many expectations. But it was there on my AOR AR7030. I had to use every trick in the book to get it readable due to weak signal and severe QRM. WRTH-2006 says this is Shepparton, with 100 kW, so it's really not a new DX-station for me, but the studio and its messages surely are. At 0651 "Tropical Cyclone Advice 23...", warning about high winds, floodings, etc. and advising people to stay calm and remain in shelter. At 0700 "On... and ... this is ABC Far North". In a newscast that followed there was a phone report from Jakarta, and at 0712 another cyclone warning. Around 0720 the signal was completely lost here. Well, I trust you're all right Craig, you seem to be prepared. Thank you for the tip. 73 (Johan Berglund, Trollhättan, Sweden AOR AR7030, longwire, HCDX via DXLD) Hi Glenn, At 0800 UT they seem to have changed over from 11650 to 6020. ToH ABC news (rioting in Solomon Is. for the past 24 hours; information about Cyclone Monica, which is bringing heavy rains to Cape York; cricket scores; weather forecast), fair. Apr 19, on 6020, at 1000 UT, news, detailed cyclone warning at 1006, several "ABC Far North" IDs and then several phone-in reports, talked a lot about the Barron River flooding and possible evacuation from the flatlands, asked for people to call in with what was going on in their area, good reception after RN signed off at 1015 (Ron Howard, Monterey, CA, RX340, with T2FD antenna, DX LISTENING DIGEST) I just realised my email yesterday is misleading re the SW schedule. Radio Australia is relaying ABC Far North in Cairns for Tropical Cyclone Monica as follows: 2000-0600 UT (6 am-6 pm Australian EST) on 11650 kHz; 0600-2000 UT (6 pm-6 am Australian EST) on 6020 kHz [still not correct: see below]. One of the two ABC radio links provided at the end of this email may also give details of live webstreaming at some stage. Nhulunbuy http://www.dxing.info/dxpeditions/nhulunbuy_2005_12.dx where I live is now receiving cyclone warnings which are likely to hit us tomorrow night, around the Thursday 1200 UT region onwards. Nhulunbuy should be OK for the next 24 hours (Wednesday 0200 UT to Thursday 0200 UT), but after that I fear things will get a little funky (Craig Edwards, NT, 0140 UT April 19, WORLD OF RADIO 1312, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Currently audible here on 11650 with a Credence Clearwater tune followed by an "ABC Far North" ID at 2130 (Steve Lare, Holland, MI, USA, April 18, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) Hi Glenn, Believe it is actually 0800 UT = 0600 PM AEST, at Cairns, Queensland. Their sunset is about 0805 UT, so the changeover in frequency works out well. Apr 20 observed ABC on 11650 from 0735 to about 0759*, with mostly detailed weather report and forecast for tomorrow, poor-fair. Changed over to 6020 with sign-on a little after 0800, suddenly on, with the news in progress (situation in the Solomon Is., etc.), fair. Before 0800 the only station heard was R. Victoria (Peru) on 6019.65 with a fair signal (Ron Howard, Monterey, CA, RX340, with T2FD antenna, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ABC SHORTWAVE COVERAGE OF TROPICAL CYCLONE MONICA ON ITS WAY TO NHULUNBUY Hi Everyone, Probably my last email for a while as we're preparing for the cyclone at work - such as taping up windows, putting computers in water proof containers, etc. If you're interested, here are the links that show what's happening - just starting to get a bit nervous now... This shows the current position http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDD65011.shtml This shows the predicted path http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDD65811.shtml ABC Radio North Queensland is still broadcasting via Radio Australia on 6020 kHz at 0800-2000 UT and on 11650 kHz on 2000-0800 UT. However their focus is really on the flooding in north Queensland as the cyclone has passed over Queensland. The ABC radio we get in Nhulunbuy on 990 kHz originates from the ABC Darwin studios on 105.7 FM. So I'm assuming 6020 and 11650 will stay with ABC Far North Queensland's Cairns studio while ABC NT may assume that the 5025 kHz and 2485 kHz is adequate for SW coverage. Cheers (Craig Edwards, Nhulunbuy (Gove), Northern Territory, Australia, nutritionandsports @ bigpond.com ced34654 @ bigpond.net.au http://www.dxing.info/dxpeditions see Australia; http://www.dxing.info/dxpeditions/nhulunbuy_2005_12.dx 2338 UT April 20, DX LISTENING DIGEST) 11650 was booming in around 0545 April 21, with Queensland programming but nothing at the moment about the storm; regular RA programming apparently around 1330 on 6020 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) 6020 noted carrying Radio Australia programming again at 1200 on 21 April (Steve Lare, Holland, MI, USA, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) Good Luck to Craig and others affected in that part of Australia. ABC via 11650 is making it to me this morning (April 20 [sic, must mean April 21), but only just at around 0730. It is weak with splash from Greece 11645. However I have heard a time check which seems to confirm what I'm listening to. 73 (Noel R. Green (NW England), 0743 UT April 21, dxldyg via DXLD I listened to 6020 this morning (April 21st) from 1230 'til a little after 1300, and there was no mention of ABC Far North or any type of Cyclone coverage. IDs including the top of hour ID only mentioned "ABC Radio National". Has the Far North service SW relay already ceased? 73 (J. D. Stephens Hampton Cove, Alabama, USA, HCDX via DXLD) For those interested, the SW coverage from Shepparton did not continue on 6020 after 11650 stopped at 0800Z. Today, 11650 carried ABC Brisbane to give the ABC Far North (Cairns) staff a rest. It has been fascinating listening over the last few days. I don't know if the SW coverage will fire up again for NE Arnhem Land as Monica approaches - does anyone know about that? Cheers (Ian Johnson, Brisbane, April 21, ARDXC via DXLD) ** AUSTRALIA. HF Radio connects when modern technology fails HF, or High Frequency, radio has been a popular form of communication for travellers, truckies, farmers and amateur radio hams for decades. It works when mobile or satellite phones can’t. Moreover, in remote areas HF is often the only method of communication. But HF radio operators in the Kimberley have noticed an alarming increase in interference on the emergency RFDS channel. Charles Gimbel has lived in Kununurra for 23 years and is a dedicated HF radio operator. He’s often heard calls for help on the HF and acted as an intermediary between emergency services like the RDFS and police. Charles recalls hearing an emergency siren on the HF set off by a toddler. The bub's mother was trapped under their vehicle along the Tanami track. By chance there was a helicopter in the region and the woman was quickly rescued and transferred to the Halls Creek Hospital. But Charles is concerned that overnight radio interference while wipe the HF out. A piercing noise is making the RFDS frequency 5300, and other nearby frequencies, unusable during the night. Mr Gimbel says this year the noise has been a constant overnight feature from about 5 til 5. Charles has lodged his concerns with the Australian Communications and Media Authority. Details are on this page: http://www.polskieradio.pl/polonia/bialorus_pl.asp But there's something weird about it, as Radio Polonia converts the local time to UTC by deducting 5 hours. CBC DECIMATES DESIGN DEPARTMENT, ANNOUNCES 79 LAYOFFS IN TORONTO April 20, 2006 (la version française suit) Our fearless leaders' latest business duhcision: ================================== The closing of CBC's design department is a big mistake and marks the end of the public broadcaster's ability to produce its own TV programs in house, according to Canadian Media Guild leaders. "The CBC is also pre-empting the government mandate review and public input by taking this action now," says Lise Lareau, national president of the Canadian Media Guild. A newspaper report published today indicates that Heritage Minister Bev Oda wants to move quickly to launch the review. "CBC says it will save $1 million per year by killing the design department and keeps referring to layoffs as another business decision," says Arnold Amber, president of the Guild's CBC Branch. "This is really about people and their lives. In this particular case, people have contributed many years of first-rate service to make CBC look wonderful on the air. When these people walk out the door for the last time, they will be taking with them the long and celebrated tradition of high-quality television design in Canada. "And where's the good business sense in this? This is a hell of a price to pay to save $1 million out of a $1.6 billion budget." By the end of the summer, CBC will no longer be able to design sets, or make costumes, props, or special effects in what has been the centre of television production for the public broadcaster. Employees were told today that design equipment would be sold off in July. Of the 79 layoffs announced today, most are in the design area. It is likely the CBC will try to use whatever savings may come from the demise of the Toronto design department to buy more programs from outside producers. "Clearly, the CBC is abandoning TV production as a core business," says Amber. "Until today, if you were developing a program or changing the set, you could work closely with the set designers and construction crews to make sure the look was right. Working with outside people won't be as easy or effective. "The CBC is slamming the door on a seasoned and talented group of people whose skills are among the best in the industry. They have given CBC TV its public face. Producers and directors making programs don't even know who they will be dealing with from one day to the next." Don Ferguson, a member and co-creator of CBC's highly successful TV show, Royal Canadian Air Farce, agrees. "Today marks the end of the dream," says Ferguson. "One of the reasons we stayed with CBC is that everything is in this building. For example, we get a script Monday, we design and build all the sets and costumes through the week, and we are on the air Friday. It's the proximity of everything that makes this so special." "Over the last 20 years, the CBC reduced the number of programs it made inside, and has been buying more and more from the commercial sector," says Lareau. "With better funding and political will, there was always the possibility of the public broadcaster making more of its own programming again. But this move puts an end to that. "If the design department was maintained and managed differently, it could be a valuable resource for the country's film, theatre and TV production industry and a source of revenue for the CBC." The CBC says that other broadcasters don't do inside design. However, Radio-Canada has a design department in Montreal with at least 133 employees. Affected employees are meeting today with representatives of the Guild and a meeting of the design group has been called for Monday to explore options for the future. Re unID on 5040 under PAPUA NEW GUINEA, perhaps MYANMAR: On 5040 there is always (when on air) the mixing product from Croatia (6165-1125), so check for parallel 6165, 7365, or 9830. It is regularly heard well here in Europe, but not listed anywhere so usually a forgotten answer to UNID problems. 73, (Eike Bierwirth, 04317 Leipzig, DL, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) Yes regular mixing product. But when looking for parallel 6165 there is always a possibility that 5040 may carry a separate program. At least some time ago this was the case. The main audio on 5040 seems to be from 1125. If mw has a split programming it usually came on 5040. This mw-program dominating seems to be a pattern when mw/sw mixing product appears (Jari Savolainen, Finland, ibid.) ** CUBA. We are about to see the end of the spring equinoctial propagation peak, and slowly enter into the high atmospheric noise period of the Northern Hemisphere, that comes together with the increased expansion of the ionosphere typical of the summer months. Among the Cuban AM stations that have interesting DX possibilities are Radio Progreso relay station located at the Isle of Youth, on 730 kiloHerz with 10 kW using solid state transmitter capable of 125 percent positive peak modulation. At the same site Radio Caribe on 1220 kiloHertz running 5 kW with similar high modulation capability. 73 and DX (Arnie Coro, April 18, ABDX via DXLD) ** ECUADOR. What I find especially interesting in this HCJB item [press release as in 6-063] is that the language they're using, as they evaluate the role of shortwave in Latin America, is remarkably similar to language being used by the BBC World Service. A religious organization as well as a public service organization are wrestling with the optimum mix of programming delivery options -- as well as their strategic intent -- and, faced with different motivations and different agendas, are approaching matters in the same way. We're talking about Latin America here -- not the USA -- yet the issues remain the same (Richard Cuff / Allentown, PA, swprograms via DXLD) ** ECUADOR [and non]. Here an excerpt of the monthly message from HCJB German service to listeners for April, received via Paul Gager (it should also appear at http://deutsch.hcjb.org/?Aktuelles_%26amp%3B_News:Abteilungsbrief but as of now this page still contains the March edition): ``Es gab wiederholt Informationssitzungen, wo wir über die Philosophie und die Strategien der Missionsleitung informiert wurde. Dabei kam dann auch ganz klar zum Ausdruck, daß die Sendungen in Deutsch nicht mehr zu den Prioritäten zählen. Bevor wir aber konkret planen können, wie es denn nun in Zukunft für die deutschsprachige Abteilung weiter gehen soll, müssen wir noch einige letzte Entscheidungen der Leitung abwarten, die voraussichtlich im Mai dieses Jahres getroffen werden.`` Summary: They received clear signs from the mission's leadership that German has no priority anymore. For detailled plannings they still have to wait for some final decisions by the leadership, expected to be made in May. No details, but certainly to be put into context with HCJB's recent press release. As already reported: The German service of HCJB still broadcasts for Central Europe, and in A06 they even do it again directly from Pifo. By the way, the earlier posted A06 schedule still shows their 75 metre winter slot for the relay via Germany, but in fact it is now again scheduled for 6015, 1700-1800 via Wertachtal, running reduced power 125 kW, cf. http://deutsch.hcjb.org/?Sendungen:Sendeplan Well, from the German point of view the special attraction of HCJB was always to receive a signal from a transmitter in South America. This resulted in the rather high popularity of HCJB amongst shortwave listeners here in Germany, and in fact the Saturday edition of HCJB's German transmissions to Europe is entirely devoted to DXers for a long time (don't know since when exactly, at least it was already in 1993). The actual DX-related contents in this show, away from news on their own, were always contributed by German DX clubs, not just as scripts but ready on tape (or today audio files). I think this speaks volumes, not just about HCJB (Kai Ludwig, Germany, April 20, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** ECUADOR. 690, 1728-, HCJB, Mar 14. However, the HFCC registration now shows these as 'NEW' rather than 'RFI' as it did in the past. In addition, the latest RFI schedule at http://www.rfi.fr/radiofr/statiques/afrique_ete2006.pdf does not list 4890, 7315, 9825 or 15605 kHz at the times shown by HFCC. Neither does the schedule that appeared in BC-DX in early March --- see http://www.bclnews.it/a06schedules/rfi.htm list Moyabi for RFI. My own monitoring also fails to show anything. Has RFI dropped its Moyabi relays? This would seemingly leave Africa No 1 and R Japan (registrations not shown in HFCC), as well as the music station heard on 16mb, as the only stations currently using Moyabi (Tony Rogers, Birmingham, UK, April 20, BDXC-UK via DXLD) ** GALAPAGOS ISLANDS. 88.70, 1245-, Radio Santa Cruz, Mar 19. Just a brief comment on the Galápagos. During the day, the entire MW spectrum is simply absent of any signals. None. My FM bandscan showed nothing at all in common with my 2005 WRTH. I do hope that the newer versions are more accurate. Nice ID for Radio Santa Cruz at 1245. Other FM stations noted were: Radio María on 100.70 in mono (heard at 0500), 101.9 (something Estación) Estéreo, 95.9 in stereo with classical music, 97.1 in stereo weakly heard, 98.3 in stereo with an open carrier only. I never did hear anything else but an open carrier. 98.9 in stereo at fair level, with an ad for 'Wilson's' at 1236. 100.70 mono station with low modulation but good reception otherwise. Due to the very early starts and long days in the water and hiking on land, plus the limitations of trying to listen on a boat, I did very little monitoring during this part of my trip. SW was often quite good especially on the higher bands during the day (Walt Salmaniw, Galapagos Is, Ecuador, April 15, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** GEORGIA. Today April 20 I heard a station with pretty poor reception on 9494.76 kHz closing down at 1122 UT with few notes from "Raindrops Keep Fallin´ on My Head". Language sounded like Russian. I guess I heard Radio Rep. Abkhazia from Georgia. 73 (Jouko Huuskonen, Turku, FINLAND, Rx:AOR 7030+, Ant: 95 m lw to E, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Yesterday [sic] I heard this very same station on exactly on same frequency at 1405 UT. Reception was a lot better. Language was not certainly Russian, but rather Georgian or Abkhaz. Nothing heard today, so it´s up to propagation (Jouko, April 21, dxing.info via DXLD) ** GERMANY. DW to take Albanian, Bosnian and Serbian off shortwave The enclosed message from Herbert Meixner says that Deutsche Welle will take the programs in Albanian, Bosnian and Serbian off shortwave as of April 25, in the case of Serbian with the exception of the 2000- 2015 program which runs on single 6130, // to 1458 from Fllaka/Albania (actually I would wait and see if 6130 will indeed continue). WDR DRM TEST --- Juergen Lohuis sent a log of this morning, Apr 20th: When logging Radio Waddenzee on 1602 kHz before and after 0658 UT, heard disturbtion of adjacent 1593 kHz from 0658 UT onwards. 73, (Patrick Robic, Austria, A-DX April 20 vi Kai Ludwig, DXLD) Why would they deliberately offset the frequency? Interference above or below to be avoided thus? Wasn`t that the analog frequency of Andorra a few sesquidecades ago; entirely coincidental no doubt (gh, DXLD) I haven't got a clue what the programme is but the frequency really does appear to be 5972. The DRM noise is too strong and intense to tell if any other is using 5970 but the offset does not appear to be due to adjacent stations in my area as none are audible at 1540 on 5965 or 5975 or 5980. DRM "cut off" appears to be sharper than normally is the case but there is still awful "hash" to contend with each side of nominal. Perhaps this would be called "side-splash" if the broadcast was in the AM mode? 73 (Noel R. Green (NW England), April 21, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) It's a data service: http://www.drmrx.org/forum/showthread.php?t=1385 (Mike Barraclough, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) Data about what? Why isn`t this in a utility band? (gh, DXLD) Hi Glenn, the DRM fans (or in some cases just owners of decoding software) identified the 5972 signal from Jülich as data service; see the enclosed message and postings at http://www.drmrx.org/forum/showthread.php?t=1385 Today also first tests on 1593 from Langenberg were reported, at times DRM, at times AM with a test tone of ca. 2 kHz (instead of more common 800 Hz or 1 kHz), estimated power around 5 kW. Reportedly they run 720 with their other new TRAM transmitter now, the old tube rig has been already scrapped. On this occasion it became also known that since late October 2005 a new 100 kW transmitter is on air from Rohrdorf on 666, replacing a 300 kW tube unit which was run at 150 kW and said to be power-hungry, leading SWR to choose this frequency for an overnight silence period (Kai Ludwig, Germany, April 20, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** GREENLAND. Hi Glenn, 3815 usb, KNR Tasiilaq (East Greenland), QSL finally received after multiple reports. This one for a 150 second recording including time check and ID sent on disc per recorded mail to Ms. Ivalu Sovandahl Pedersen, Communication Assistant, Kissameqqortuunnguaq 15, Postboks 1007, 3900 Nuuk. Email: isp @ knr.gl These details came directly from DXLD, so many thanks, I am so chuffed with this. The letter gives the schedule as 12 - 1.15 pm and 6 - 7.15 pm Greenlandic Time. I have QSLd Thule AFB from a few years back and this is a 'utility' transmitter but I'm counting it as a broadcast station. BTW I am heading back to South Africa in August after 12 years in London. I'll be back in my home town Cape Town where there has been some truly remarkable long distance AM reception including Agana Guam recently. Regards (Graham Bell, London, England, April 21, DX LISTENING DIGEST) 3815 USB, Kalaalit Nunaata Radioa-TV, Tasiilaq. I received acknowledgement e-mail in 8 hours from Ms. Ivalu Søvndahl Pedersen, Communications Assistant at KNR in Nuuk, website: http://www.knr.gl/english for an e-mailed report to isp @ knr.gl Ms. Pedersen said that a QSL letter had been sent today via Air Mail. That's about as fast as they come! Next challenge: getting a "real" QSL from OZL, the transmitting station in Tasiiliq (a.k.a. Ammassalik) for the same broadcast heard on Mar 02. I have learned the hard way that e-mailing reception reports is all about timing - if you send a report to arrive in the recipient`s mailbox early morning on a workday the chances of a reply are much greater. Not surprisingly reports e- mailed on a Friday afternoon typically never make it to the top of the recipient's "to-do" list a few days later. Ms. Pedersen further wrote: Dear Mr. Churchill, Yes, we call it Summer time/Winter time in Central Greenland. There are still three All India Radio stations in the 90 mb: 3223 kHz Shimla, 3315 kHz Bhopal and 3365 kHz Delhi. Yesterday Bhopal and Delhi were about closing time after 1730 UTC. P.S. La Croazia su 594 kHz dopo un po' di proteste ha staccato tutto! Currently VON is on air as stated in the latest schedule. The homepage hasn't been updated since Oct. 2004, and also before the schedules there were usually outdated, though they sometimes tried to update them. I tried that Email-address on the homepage some time ago, but the account was over quota. Spanish talk, with mentions of 'Policía Nacional' and 'Ecuador'. Also heard 'nuestra patria'. I recorded via the mp3 recorder past 1800. At 1805 I noted music and ads and mentions of 'Amazonas'. One of the regulars heard during the daytime in the Napo jungles. At 1806:30, mentioned 'Departamento de Amazonas', and 'La congress Nacional' (or something like that; Spanish is not a language I understand). There are elections upcoming, and therefore many many ads for congressmen. Finally caught an ID at 1942. 6895, 1615-, La Voz del Campesino, Mar 14. Excellent reception with Cuban sounding music. Interesting WBCQ Wednesday evening. Just in case you weren't monitoring then: WBCQ aired WoR #1312 at the regular 2200 UT time on 7415, but then repeated it immediately after at 2230! A blessing for me, as I had just gotten in and to the radio at 2215, so I was able to hear and tape the entire #1312. Then Off The Hook followed as scheduled, and then there was a repeat of the Allan Weiner WorldWide program with the James Lloyd interview instead of the scheduled programming during the 0000 UT hour. Certainly a worthwhile series of programming, and a service to WoR fans who may find the 2200 UT time too early in these days of DST and evening activities. We can only hope for a recurrence. 73, (Will Martin, MO, April 20, DX LISTENING DIGEST) No, I did not notice, as reception was quite poor here once I confirmed the correct show started at 2200. Another WBCQ anomaly: 18910-CLSB was on much earlier than usual, Friday April 21 at 1337 with Christian Media Network show in French; at 1338 paused for CMN promotion in English, 1340 back to French. ``Prophécie Québec`` had previously been on 9330-CLSB during this hour, and it was again on this occasion, but NOT // the show on 18910! I chose not to try to determine if it was the same show a few seconds or minutes offset, or a totally different episode. (gh, DXLD) ** U S A. Meishel, Love the music on Galactic Voyager, but your constant hyping of KCSN slogans is driving us nuts. A simple mention of ``KCSN`` will do, once, during every break, altho a legal ID once an hour is all that is really needed! We`ve got ``arts and roots`` coming out of our ears, and now you`ve added the HD hype. Often it seems that you give the slogans more than once during a single break. Enough! Enough! We KNOW we are listening to KCSN. We know what it is and what it does. We do NOT need to be constantly reminded with the same tired old slogans. Give your listeners some credit. If doing this is your personal choice, I beg you to reconsider. If management dictates it, tell me so I may take my complaints to them. Regards, Glenn Hauser (to Meishel Menachekanian, KCSN, via DXLD) Hi Glenn, Thank you for your comments on my presentation. I have shared your views with KCSN manager Fred Johnson. Thank you also for listening to my show. I appreciate your support. Best wishes, (Meishel to gh, via DXLD) Well, that`s a bit noncommittal. In fact, there are no SW broadcasts currently being radiated from Uruguay. Transmitter problems in the SODRE's two SW outlets were confirmed this past week after I phoned a technical operator at site. He told that priority is on the MW side, where CX26 has been with some problems lately. He also referred to certain difficulty on obtaining spare parts and reduced budget also affects. In the general SW scene from Uruguay, owners are more interested on the Internet streaming. I spent three weeks in Quito, Ecuador and environs, the Napo River (a major tributary of the Amazon), and finally the Galápagos Is during three weeks in March. My listening equipment consisted of a Kaito/Degen 1103 receiver (highly recommended!), with a RS wind up antenna of about 5 or 6 meters in length. I recorded many hours (still to be listened to, by the way) on a tiny iRiver mp3 recorder which was capable of recording some 70 or more hours of time in mono mp3 format. Pretty amazing compared to the old days of cassette tapes, and then MD. I did occasionally encounter some noise from the mp3 display, but this was usually alleviated by moving the mp3 recorder away from the receiver. The jungle was quite amazing (radio wise) as it was exceptionally quiet, especially during times of no local power. At our jungle location, we had generator power from 1800 to 2200 local only, which was quite nice. Although not noticeable for the most part, there still was a slight amount of noise during those hours, but still far far less than what I experience in Victoria. It's like going back in time to the days without the myriads of electronics that pollute our RF environment these days. Quito generally was pretty quiet in our location as well. The Galápagos, for the most part were a write-off, as being on a boat made it next to impossible to do any serious listening. Hope you enjoy the report. One day I'll create some audio links to the various stations heard. Keep your eye on http://www.dxer.ca (Walt Salmaniw, Victoria, BC, April 15, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) Walt`s R. The museum is only open 4 or 5 times a year so this offers a rare chance to see the many fascinating exhibits that are displayed there. These include spark transmitters from the late 1890's right through to some very QRO commercial transmitters from the 1960's. There is also a good selection of Valves and early Television Broadcast Cameras. Recent additions include a fully equipped Ships Radio Room and the collection of Marconi and other Marine Radio equipment donated by the late Donald Imber G0VIS. The Chelmsford Amateur Radio Society will be operating all day from inside the preserved wooden hut that housed the original 2MT broadcast station. Visitors to the stations are most welcome. Harmonics yg via DXLD) The geomagnetic field ranged from quiet to severe storm levels. Solar wind speed ranged from a low of near 400 km/s early on 13 April to a high of about 700 km/s early on 10 April, and again midday on 15 April. Early on 09 April, ACE sensors detected increases in temperature, density, and wind velocity, along with fluctuations in the IMF Bz to +10 to -18 nT. This was the result of a co-rotating interaction region preceding a high speed stream from a coronal hole. The geomagnetic field responded with unsettled to active periods through midday on 10 April at middle latitudes, while unsettled to major storm periods were observed at high latitudes through late on 10 April. Thereafter, and through midday on 13 April, wind speed decayed from a high of about 700 km/s early on the 10th to a low of about 400 km/s early on the 13th. During this time frame, the IMF Bz was very weak, not varying much beyond +/- 2 nT. The geomagnetic field responded with quiet to unsettled conditions at all latitudes. By midday on 13 April, an interval of minor to major storm conditions was observed at high latitudes between 13/1200 UTC to 13/1800 UTC. The interplanetary magnetic field strengthened, and the Bz component rotated smoothly from 13/1500 UTC through 14/1200 UTC from 17 nT to a maximum negative value of -15 nT. Solar wind speeds ranged from approximately 480 km/s to 570 km/s during this period. By early on 14 April, the geomagnetic field strengthened further with active to minor storm readings at middle latitudes, while major to severe storm levels were observed at high latitudes. These conditions persisted through late on 15 April. The unusual solar wind conditions appeared to be consistent with a co- rotating interaction region that may have been complicated by the presence of transient flow. The summary period ended with solar wind steady at about 600 km/s, while the IMF Bz relaxed, not varying much beyond +/- 3 nT. The geomagnetic field responded with quiet conditions at middle latitudes and unsettled to active conditions at high latitudes. FORECAST OF SOLAR AND GEOMAGNETIC ACTIVITY 19 APRIL - 15 MAY 2006 Solar activity is expected to be at predominately very low to low levels with isolated moderate activity possible after the return of old Region 865 on 22 April - 06 May. No greater than 10 MeV proton events are expected. The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at high to very high levels on 19 – 22 April and again on 07 – 15 May. The geomagnetic field is expected to be at quiet to unsettled levels for the majority of the forecast period. Active to minor storm conditions are expected on 02 May and again on 06 – 07 May, while active to major storm conditions are expected on 10 -14 May, all due to effects from recurrent coronal hole wind streams. :Product: 27-day Space Weather Outlook Table 27DO.txt :Issued: 2006 Apr 18 1924 UTC # Prepared by the US Dept. of Commerce, NOAA, Space Environment Center # Product description and SEC contact on the Web # http://www.sec.noaa.gov/wwire.html # # 27-day Space Weather Outlook Table # Issued 2006 Apr 18 # # UTC Radio Flux Planetary Largest # Date 10.7 cm A Index Kp Index 2006 Apr 19 80 8 3 2006 Apr 20 80 8 3 2006 Apr 21 75 8 3 2006 Apr 22 80 8 3 2006 Apr 23 80 12 3 2006 Apr 24 85 8 3 2006 Apr 25 90 8 3 2006 Apr 26 95 8 3 2006 Apr 27 95 5 2 2006 Apr 28 95 5 2 2006 Apr 29 95 8 3 2006 Apr 30 95 8 3 2006 May 01 95 8 3 2006 May 02 95 20 4 2006 May 03 95 12 3 2006 May 04 90 10 3 2006 May 05 85 5 2 2006 May 06 85 25 5 2006 May 07 85 15 3 2006 May 08 80 8 3 2006 May 09 75 10 3 2006 May 10 75 20 4 2006 May 11 75 30 5 2006 May 12 75 30 5 2006 May 13 75 20 4 2006 May 14 75 15 3 2006 May 15 75 10 3 (http://www.sec.noaa.gov/radio via WORLD OF RADIO 1312, DXLD) ###
