(Jan OK1IVO Kolbaba, Oct 27, DX LISTENING DIGEST) OK, I figured they were close. However, for cultural or political reasons, formal broadcasts in the other language could be done. (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) See SWEDEN ** DENMARK. Dear friends, October 15, 2005, became a day of national importance to the Danish people. Denmark has been a Kingdom continuously since year 936 a.c. and is the eldest, still existing Kingdom in the world! As reported in earlier DX-Windows, in May 2004 Crown Prince Frederik married Australian born Mary Donaldson who on this October night gave birth to their first child - a Prince! From the present length of 51 cms and weighing 3500 grams he will grow up and be a heir to the throne of Denmark. This important, national event was communicated to the Danish people by all modern and ancient means of communication: Radio (first with the news as usual), TV, Internet (I noticed that my local provider intermittently broke down that night due to too many messages). At noon on this beautiful, sunny late autumn day, 3-400 hundred years old cannons, formerly defending Copenhagen, Elsinore, Fredericia and Flensburg (in Germany), fired the traditional 21 shot salute. Shortly after sunset, people gathered at no less than 220 high "beacon" hills throughout Denmark where "Bavnebaal" fires were lit by the Home Guard, announcing an important, national event, according to a Danish tradition dating back from the times of the Vikings, or maybe even 1- 2,000 years before that. The programs are produced in their Tokyo office and sent to VT Communications Ltd. via internet. The transmission will be over the VT Communications` facility in the third country (probably Khabarovsk, Russia). Glad to see you on Cox cable Enid now, as I can`t stand Univisión and hope Telemundo may have some better programming. But how am I supposed to find out? Your program schedule is NOT found at: YOUR OWN WEBSITE, TV Guide, Zap2It, or Titan online listings for Cox Cable Enid, Enid News & Eagle TV supplement, TV Week, Sunday Oklahoman, TV Guide magazine (Telemundo not included), TV Guide channel (still skips ch 65 where you are here). Cox notified us a few weeks ago that Telemundo was to be added (they did not say KTUZ, so I supposed it would just be the satellite network feed). You and they have had weeks to get the program schedule distribution up and running. How much longer will it take? We are much too busy to tune in at random hoping to find something of interest, or depend on program promos. Especially when a new channel is added, we need the ENTIRE PROGRAM GRID, to get an overview of what is available. Excuse my English, but I gather KTUZ-TV corporate is not exactly monolingual (Glenn Hauser, Enid, to KTUZ-TV, Shawnee-OKC, [pronounced with Spanish accent] via DXLD) ** PAKISTAN. We welcome you to a fascinating journey into Russia, a vast territory that occupies one third of Eurasia stretching from the Baltic Sea to the Pacific Ocean. Ten time belts separate the country`s east from west. And the huge area is dotted with regions, each remarkable for its history, nature, climate, traditions, economy and customs and famous for remarkable personalities. The quiz RUSSIAN REGIONS will unfold in five stages, each stage lasting two months, during which we`ll be introducing you to a region on which you`ll have to answer one question. Listen attentively and you`ll get the answer right. Each stage will be followed by a month- long pause to sum up the results. The winners will get souvenirs from the regions` administrations. And the winners of the whole project will get an invitation to visit one of the regions. The quiz RUSSIAN REGIONS will be on the air as of November 6th on Sundays at 15.20, 20.20 and on Mondays 03.20 UTC. Regards (TONY CURRIE, Programme Director, Radio six international, Oct 28, DX LISTENING DIGEST) From the Radio Six website, updated today at 0640 UT. With the clocks in most countries going back an hour on Sunday, there's a change in the time of our transmissions to Europe, the Middle East, North Africa and the Pacific. From this Sunday the transmission will begin at 1200 GMT on the mighty 9290 kHz (via Latvia-ds). Each week we'll feature one of our regular web shows. This Sunday, Joanne Davy will be back with more of her kind of music. And from Saturday November 5th, Saturday Sounds will start at 0700 GMT. In reality, this should mean these programmes appear at the same time as before, because most listeners will have adjusted their clocks simultaneously, but listeners in New Zealand will hear the show an hour later than previously. There appear to be no changes to the rest of the frequencies and the 5105 [sic] relay from Maine is still listed as being on hiatus and 15725 via Italy is also listed inactive. This should make the Radio Six schedule as follows: 0700-0800 9290 via Latvia to Europe Asia and Pacific Saturday 0700-0800 13840 via Italy [sic] to Europe Africa and Middle East 2nd Sunday of month 0830-0930 13840 via Italy [sic] to Europe Africa and Middle East 2nd Saturday of month 1200-1300 9290 via Latvia to Europe Asia and Pacific Sunday 1900-2000 5775 via Italy [sic] to Europe Africa and Middle East 2nd Thursday of month (Daniel Sampson, Prime Time Shortwave, http://www.primetimeshortwave.com dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** SENEGAL [non]. 17555, WADR, via Rampisham (?), *0800-0859*, Oct 05, 06, 07, 08 and 09, info programme in English until 0830, then in French. Hi Glenn; RNE1 is a station I have been following for the last week, and I finally got a clear ID on it last night. Spain RNE1 585 KHz Madrid --- After listening to this frequency for the last week, I finally heard a clean ID at 0406z on 10-29. "Radio Nacional de España" followed by a spoken-word program with short musical bridges, mainly slow ballads or instrumentals. Splash from 580 has been the only thing hindering good intelligibility, although having the crystal filter on the narrowest setting didn't help recovered audio any, either. The signal peaked at 33533; this during the ID, nonetheless! Many deep fades after this. Receiver: RME45 and 75 meter dipole with balanced feed and no tuner. Also loud het on WLS 890, presumably from Algeria, although there was no chance of getting much audio on them. 1314 and 1134 had easily detectable carriers, but recovered audio insufficient to obtain any IDs or even identify the languages. We have a local on 1130, so this says a lot for the conditions. 73 (Steven Zimmerman, Milwaukee, WI, Oct 29, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** SPAIN [and non]. (da l'Antenna di ottobre 1962) (Roberto Scaglione http://www.bclnews.it PLAYDX via DXLD) Voice of Turkey in Turkish, Oct 29 at 1920 on 9460 had the same severe distortion I hear earlier in the day on 15350, so likely the same transmitter; but at this moment bits of Wagner were being played rather than Turkish music, so no great loss. Altho it would be tedious to pick out all the changes coming in January, I notice that besides the new Italian service, the Croatian semihour at 1700 becomes Croatian-Serbian (not Serbo-Croatian!), and the Serbian semihour at 1430 is eliminated; perhaps this indirectly makes room for Italian at 1730. Also, why do they keep specifying DSB? However, it is not known when transmissions will get under way, but keep an ear open on around 26080 kHz (PAUL DAVID, Wembley Park, United Kingdom, dxldyg via DXLD) There were supposed to be three different stations, one of them WRN, presumably on three different frequencies. I wonder which one this is? (Glenn, ibid.) ** U S A. VOA EXPANDS PROGRAMMING TO AFRICA Beginning October 31, the Voice of America (VOA) will expand radio broadcasts to Western and Southern Africa in response to listener requests for increased programming to the region. VOA's Hausa Language Service will expand its popular breakfast program to a full hour. Studio 7, VOA's news program for Zimbabwe, is set to feature a new evening lineup in response to listener requests for increased broadcasts in the Shona and Ndebele languages. From Monday through Friday, Studio 7 will provide daily 30-minute reports in those languages and in English, expanding the broadcast from 60 to 90 minutes. The November 1 WWCR program guide is now on line, and it shows Cyberline still at 0500-0600 after News, but Cyberline also appears at 0600-0800, so it appears that all three hours will aired. Both entries have this as being live. DX Radio School is still shown at 0430, as well as Monday 2100 and Thursday 1030, so it seems that it will continue in reruns at least through November. I just noticed that the WWCR schedule, as posted online a couple of days ago, shows 3215, not 3210 (John Norfolk, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) Contrary to the printed sked I received and published. Has used 3215 before instead of 3210 due to some interference issues; 0000-1000 UT, transmitter 1 (gh, DXLD) ** U S A. Hello Glenn, Due to circumstances beyond my control, I've had to discontinue the present incarnation of the "WBCQ Archives" webcasts. One of these was relaying WOR weekdays and COM weekends at 1600. I intend to bring this service back online from a different source in a few days and I'll let you know when it's back. Regards, (Larry Will, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Larry, Do you expect this will be on the same schedule? (1700 UT after DST) 73, (Glenn to Larry, via DXLD) Yes, I plan to maintain the same schedule for WOR and COM, and it may be possible for additional airings. Regards, (Lw, ibid.) And what about the live webcasts of WBCQ 7415, off for some time? (gh to Larry, ibid.) Glenn, Eventually we would like to get some kind of live webcast of 7415 back online. We're looking at two options - one originating from the studio in Monticello and another from a web-connected receiver in WBCQ's groundwave. Allan views the webcast as a non-essential service, and with the limited 'net bandwidth at the station we're looking at alternatives acceptable to all. It will take some time to figure this out as the webcasts have always been a volunteer effort and our schedules are awfully busy. In any event I do hope to being back the "after hours"/"archives" webcast soon. Regards, Lw (Larry Will, Oct 29, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** U S A. WYFR is back on several frequencies, checked in the 1400 hour Sat Oct 29. Just tuning around, I found: 17750 English, 17505 Spanish, 15770 Portuguese, 15130 Spanish, 13695 Camping, 11865 Spanish, 11830 English, 11670 Spanish --- so that`s at least 8 transmitters; there could be more. Did not check on Fri Oct 28; did anybody notice whether WYFR had returned by then, or the RTI relays, such as 5950 and 9680 in the evening? Hi Glenn. I'm in St. Petersburg at the moment. Will probably return to Miami tomorrow, although gas still seems difficult to come by there. We now have electricity at home and at the office, but not at the transmitter site. There was a lot of damage to power poles there, and it will probably be at least a few days yet before we get power again there; maybe more. The corner reflector antenna going south appears to not be damaged, but the fence around it fell down partially. We have a crew ready to put it back up on Monday and/or Tuesday. The North American antenna was badly damaged, and the manufacturer (who is in central Florida) is coming next weekend to try to repair it and make some improvements on it. So if we get power back, we should be able to get 9955 kHz back on this coming week sometime, and probably the following week for transmissions to North America on 7385. I'll keep you up to date (Jeff White, WRMI, 1835 UT Oct 29, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Are you OK, Bob? (gh, to Bob Wilkner, via DXLD) Power out, long gas lines, and using generators. We are fine here, lucky. Tnx (Bob Wilkner, P’ompano Beach FL, Oct 29, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Still haven`t heard from Chuck Bolland in Clewiston, S shore of Lake Okdeechobee (gh, DXLD) ** U S A. WWL and Katrina --- I was in Biloxi (adjacent D'Iberville) from September 20 to October 5. As a brief aside: Southern Mississippi is a real mess, far worse than most Yankees who have never seen hurricane effects first hand can comprehend. Most of the volunteer work I did was warehouse type work, loading and unloading, and distribution of emergency food and other supplies through a Methodist Church. Then, mucking out houses, that is, completely gutting to the studs houses flooded by 2 to 10 feet of water. Those interested in more information on that, contact me off group and I'll send files. As for WWL: There was a brief clip on TV news about WWL and other stations "merging" after Katrina about September 15. They were based in Baton Rouge, I think. On 870 kHz, it is a "local" and well heard in Biloxi, only about 80 miles away. I tuned in often, and even by October 5th, the programming was exclusively related to the continuing emergency. I did not write any of this down at the time, but they announced their outlets on several AM and FM outlets. Programming had many public service announcements on properly assessing a house for gas leaks, those using Insulin during long periods of power outage, flooding reports as Hurricane Rita came through, and phone in shows relating almost exclusively to people's experiences with insurance, FEMA, the Red Cross, health care needs, and ideas on how to cut through some of the Red Tape in legal issues, reports of price gouging, and so on. The program was very interesting, and tried to make sense of just how large an impact this storm had in disrupting lives across an entire region larger than many countries. This was an invaluable source of information for many across the region still in shelters or with friends or relatives, often still without power several weeks after Katrina. That they are still in this "emergency mode" nearly two months after the storm (heard here in central New York this past week at about 2000 EDT) should tell us that the scope of devastation of this storm is nearly unprecedented in our history. WWL and its affiliates are providing a nearly unique service, and for most of those affected in almost any way by Hurricane Katrina and who stayed in the region, WWL will be an integral part of any memories they retain about their experiences during this disaster. Where is the ITU? How they allow this on defined analog transmission bands? Is it that there isn't enough room for those tests out of band before they standarize and everyone can get them? (Raul Saavedra. Costa Rica, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) RADIO EQUIPMENT FORUM +++++++++++++++++++++ WHO RUNS THE TRANSMITTERS? Re 5-185: I fully agree, I have to apologize for sounding too generalistic. My actual point got a bit lost in the discussion, and that was that until very recent years it was not much known in DX circles that many transmitters which DXers heard were not actually run by the stations they carry. A "Radio Moscow transmitter" for example never was run by Radio Moscow; neither was a transmitter of Swiss Radio International or Radio France Internationale, nor were the Flevo transmitters in Holland transmitters of Radio Nederland Wereldomroep. This caused confusion and misunderstandings when it came to operational questions and air time leasing to third party producers. Perhaps the "worldwide rate" in regard to ownership of national transmitter networks is 50:50 or even less, but what I initially wanted to express was that one cannot automatically assume that transmitters in a country are run by the broadcasters - every so often this is not the case (Bernd Trutenau, Lithuania, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Cf. DXLD 5-180 & 185, maybe what follows is of some interest for your bulletin. In the particular case of Algeria, if the state holds full monopoly of all things radio & TV, and RTA is a government-owned stn, then there's not much difference... or is there? When one talks about the BBC, RFI, DW and the like and see that a given political crisis triggers off certain new language services, who's behind all that - the broadcaster alone? Let's not be naïve. In practical terms, it's the station one hears that matters, not what's behind it, even if it's not 100% legally accurate, so let's not waste too much time discussing this sort of technicalities. However, since other countries were mentioned, and to explain how the situation in Portugal is like, here it is. Radio & TV broadcasting transmitters belong to the stations themselves, with one not really old exception - the TV station that belongs to the group owning R. Comercial & its sister stations, e.g. RCP, now via RC MW transmitters. When the two private commercial TV stations SIC & TVI were licensed, slightly over 10 years ago, the RTP-Radiotelevisão Portuguesa (pub., comm.) [not to be confused with RTP-Rádio e Televisão de Portugal, which was created in early 2004 to include the RDP & the RTP... they should have chosen a better name for this is confusing] was forced to sell its entire transmitter network to the short lived TDP- Teledifusora de Portugal, a public companhy that existed solely to operate the RTP transmitters as well as those be used by the new TV stations. At the last minute, so to speak, the TVI station chose to install its own TV network, so TDP leased its network to the RTP (mainland+islands) and SIC (mainland) only. A few years later, the TDP became part of PT-Portugal Telecom http://www.telecom.pt Above all, ten year old PT owns the national telephone lines, is an ISP, owns a mobile phone co. and operates HF (what's left) and satellite communications (formerly R. Marconi's monopoly... utility station DXers may recall this one [yes, I do, CPRM = Companhia Portuguesa Rádio Marconi --- gh]). The url http://www.ptii.pt/PTII/PT/Canais/PTnoMundo/PT+no+Mundo.htm shows the countries where PT is envolved as a telecommunications operator. Finally, there were some rumors as to all RDP transmitters being operated by PT some day. I hope it stays as it is. 73, (Carlos Gonçalves, Portugal, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ###
