Shelagh Rogers Monday, March 17, 2003 TORONTO (CP) - Sounds like Shelagh Rogers is heading for the West Coast. Rogers' morning program, Sounds Like Canada, will be redesigned and moved to Vancouver in September says Jane Chalmers, CBC Radio vice- president. "I am very excited about this transition," Rogers says in a statement. "I believe that this increased regional representation is the right direction for the program and I look forward to the show being able to tell even more stories that reflect all parts of Canada." Vancouver-based producer Anne Penman takes over as the new executive producer with contributions coming from Bernard St. Laurent and a unit that will remain in Toronto. Amid rumours that she was unhappy with the format of the flagship morning show that began last October, Rogers has been on the medical leave since January for high blood pressure. Sounds Like Canada, the CBC's successor to This morning, airs weekdays at 10:05 a.m. on Radio One (From Harry van Vugt, Windsor, Ontario, Canada, DXLD) ** CANADA [non]. Glenn, I'm not sure whether you'd want to file this under CANADA (non) or USA (non): When I was listening to CBC Radio One blanket coverage at around 3:35 AM ET on Friday, I heard a repeat of an interview which Mary Lou Findlay did on Thursday evening with Prior Smith, producer/host of "Canada Calling." This is a news programme meant for Canadian snowbirds in the southern US, with a 5-minute news bulletin Mondays to Saturdays and a 15-minute weekly review on Sundays. The show was run, until earlier this week, on 24 stations in Florida, Texas and Arizona. However, WENG in Englewood, FL [1530 -- I had to look it up since Smith didn't give the frequency] dropped the show after Tuesday's edition. Smith had reported on Prime Minister Chrétien's statement to the House of Commons, on Monday, that Canada would not be joining in the war coalition. The station manager (or PD -- my notes are not quite clear about this) dropped the show since he wanted only "pro-American" news on his station. Smith says that the manager/PD is new to the job, and quite right-wing. He also said that he wasn't personally informed of this, but was informed by a third party who had received a press release from the station. Smith told Findlay that he isn't particularly concerned, since there are four other stations which can be heard in the Englewood area which also carry "Canada Calling." He also said that the press release had sort of left the door open to return to carrying the show next winter, but that if approached, Smith would tell them to "get lost." BTW, "Canada Calling" has been on the air for 50 years. Smith has been producing the show for the past 26 years, from his log home north of Peterborough, Ontario. Incidentally, there doesn't seem to be a website for "Canada Calling." However, I found an article from the November 2002 issue of Broadcast Dialogue magazine at the following URL: http://www.broadcastdialogue.com/article_view.asp?action=view&idnumber=407 73- (Bill Westenhaver, QC, DXLD) ** CUBA. Observer March 19 via DXLD) ** IRAQ [and non]. Hi Glenn; Just wanted to give you my observations of the Iraq Satellite Channel between 0525 and 0710 UTC Mar 20. Between 0525 and 0710 UTC Mar 20, I was observing the behavior of Iraq Satellite Channel on Telstar 5, Ku band. At 0528, a man in a military uniform gives a brief address, followed immediately by the national anthem. Saddam Hussein came on at 0531 with an address, but approximately 30 seconds into the address, the transmission was interrupted by full-field color bars and white noise on the audio. The quality of the color bars was poor, possibly indicating that the uplink was being jammed. During this ten-minute interval of interruption, parts of Hussein's speech made it through on audio, as if someone was repeaking the uplink dish, and momentarily overcoming the interference. I'm not sure about this, but I think the ISC is received in France on C-band analog from Iraq and sent to the US, where it is digitized, and uplinked to Telstar 5. Maybe the C-band uplink was being jammed? Programming resumed at 0540, and the above sequence was repeated, suggesting that Hussein's address was possibly prerecorded. This time the color bar disruption lasted until approximately 0630, with audio portions occasionally bleeding through during this time. Jordanian TV carried Saddam's whole address just after 0700 with no interruptions; they received the address from another Iraqi TV network. (Steven Zimmerman, WI, March 20, 2003, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** IRAQ. I picked the official Radio Baghdad, ``idha`at jamhoryat al Iraq`` on 11787 kHz around 1835 UT with a speech by one of the listeners followed by a song --- the audio is VERY bad. SIO 232... unfortunately the transmission of Baghdad radio on satellite is not working as I write this. I used to pick them up on the Hot Bird satellite 13 Deg. East, the Iraqi satellite channel is still on though the media minister of Iraq declared that the Americans are trying to interfere with the Iraqi satellite channel --- but we will manage to get it back on the air. in a press conference in Baghdad today. I'll try to get the Radio Baghdad on another satellite, maybe the Arab Sat 26 Deg. east. Will let you know (Tarek Zeidan, Cairo, Egypt, March 20, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** IRAQ. Baghdad 11787.04. Hi, just a note for those who are maybe interested - there is a carrier on 11787 kHz today (20 MAR, observed from ca. 0600 and at 0900 still there). On this frequency General Program from Iraq should be relayed (Karel Honzik, Czechia, hard- core-dx, Mar 20 via DXLD) Yes, heard on Mar 21, at around 1000-1200 UT on 11787.04 kHz, BUT very weak program audio level. Co-channel interference on 11785 from Radio Cairo Egypt and VoA Udorn, Thailand in Chinese (Wolfgang Bueschel, Germany, Mar 21, DX LISTENING DIGEST) I have been hearing the carrier on 11787 but not positively any audio --- I think what I could hear was splash from 11785. According to BBC radio, several B52 bombers took off from Fairford [UK] around lunchtime. Maybe they have equipment with them which will help to re-engineer Saddam's transmitters? Propagation is still poor - it seems something also went "bang" in the ionosphere during the night. The 13mb is still closed, but there are a few signals coming in on 16m now. I'll be happy when things settle down again and we can get back to some 'serious' monitoring! (Noel Green, UK, March 21, via Wolfgang Bueschel, DXLD) Totally agree, yes, the signal was always a poor, weak carrier in past few years. Radio Baghdad's equipment was totally knocked down by Bush father. Seldom could be recognized few words of the program content, except in our early morning grey line/sunrise portion 0500 til 0800 UT, like the peak of R Sanaa on 9779v. Yes, heard it on our DLF radio. Instantly I thought about the airroute they took. Because Switzerland and Austria closed their air space for war planes except hospital emergency flights. And is the French air space also closed for US bombers usage now? The estimated air route via Belgium, Germany, CzechRep, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria stops on the Turkish border, because Turkish parliament denied all Pentagon inquiries yet. So assume, they took the southern route, via Start Point, Lands Ends, Scilly Isl, Spain, Mediterranean Sea, Malta, Cyprus, Israel, Jordan, Saudi Arabia/Kuwait. At 1000 UT I heard only few stations on 13 and 16 mb. Also poor conditions on 31 to 23 mb, but conditions increased a little bit from about 1115 UT (Wolfgang Bueschel, Germany, March 21, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** IRAQ. Media behaviour note 1600-1800 gmt 21 Mar 03 All Iraqi TV and radio programmes in this period were interspersed with patriotic songs hailing Iraq and President Saddam Husayn. In a live two-way interview on the UK's Channel 4 television station at 1930 gmt, the channel's correspondent in Baghdad stated that Iraqi domestic TV and radio were still operational. Republic of Iraq Television Video reception of Republic of Iraq Television continues to be unmonitorable. However, the audio of the station was heard on the frequency 612.750 kHz from 1620 until 1810 gmt, when the audio became unmonitorable. Iraq Satellite Channel 1602 gmt: Recorded sermon from the Muhammad Rasulullah Mosque by Shaykh Musatafa al-Samarra'i, the mosque's preacher and imam, who speaks about the anti-Iraq war and urges Iraqis to rise up to defend their country. 1700 gmt: Newscast containing the following reports: 1. President Saddam Husayn orders cash awards to soldiers who shoot down enemy planes or capture or kill enemy soldiers. 2. Information Minister Muhammad Sa'id al-Sahhaf holds a news conference and asks journalists to go to hospitals to see the wounded and to inquire about the bombarded areas. Interior minister also takes part in the news conference. 3. The bombardment of Iraqi areas causes several casualties among civilians. The wounded speak about what happened to them. 4. A US spokesman "admits that a US helicopter crashed and 16 soldiers were killed". 5. Reactions to "the US-British aggression" against Iraq continue. Reports from various parts of the world cited. 6. Extensive demonstrations in Arab and world capitals to protest the aggression on Iraq. Reports on demonstrations in various Arab and world capitals. 7. Friday prayer preachers at Iraqi mosques prayed to God to protect Iraq and President Saddam Husayn from the invaders. 8. Christian communities in Iraq hold special prayers to pray to God to protect Iraq and President Saddam Husayn. 9. Peace activists in Baghdad reiterate their solidarity with Iraq. From 1730-1755 gmt, the television carries a recording of a news conference held by Iraqi Information Minister Muhammad Sa'id al- Sahhaf and Interior Minister Mahmud Dhiyab al-Ahmad. At 1757 gmt, the station carries a news summary. The only item in the cast is Saddam's meeting with Qusay Saddam Husayn, member of the Iraq Command of the Arab Socialist Ba'th Party and supervisor of the Republican Guard, and General Sultan Hashim Ahmad, the defence minister. Republic of Iraq Radio Main Service The station continues to be heard on 603 kHz (believed to be the Ninawah transmitter), 846 kHz (believed to be the Nasiriyah transmitter) and 909 kHz (believed to be the Baghdad transmitter). The station was also heard on 1044 kHz, a frequency which has in the past been used by Voice of Youth radio operated by Uday Saddam Husayn. The station continues to carry scheduled news on the hour, as well as patriotic songs and talks. Internet The Iraqi News Agency (INA) web site, http://www.uruklink.net/iraqnews/ which became inaccessible at around 0830 gmt, remained inaccessible as of 1800 gmt. PREVIEWS Edition 241 Mar. 22-28, 2003 (UT) SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT! Massive power price increases have prompted Radio New Zealand International to reduce transmission power from 100 to 50 kW and also reduce transmission hours. Unseasonably dry weather has pushed the spot price for electricity to a multiple of its usual level. Comments to WRTVH data, which is wrong year after year... RDP: The transmitter under "CEN" is in fact at Castanheira do Ribatejo, not Lisboa, and it's about 20 km NE of the capital; the old 10 kW reserve units and the two Brown Boveri 135 kW units are inactive and the "CEN"-Centro Emissor Nacional became an automated, sat.-fed station; it operates on 666 kHz with 10 kW. The 720 kHz 10 kW site listed under Porto is in fact at Miramar, about 9 km south of Porto, and was formerly used by Radio Club Português; the old RDP site at Azurara, north of Porto, is inactive, but still houses the (old) 100 kW transmitters plus the also old reserve units. What partly explains why those sites (Castanheira and Miramar) may offer easy TA reception is the fact that the former is right next to the Tejo RIver and the latter is very near the shore line. The same may also apply to Mentemo-o-Velho, central Portugal, 630 kHz 10 kW, as the tower is, like in Castanheira, very near a river in this case, the Mondego. Those are good factors for signal take off. Rádio Comercial The WRTVH keeps listing both used channels and/or sites as well as the sole two sites that are actually in use for the station MW program which IDs as Rádio Nacional, not Rádio Comercial, viz: Canidelo (south of Porto, right on the south bank of the Douro river and also very near the ocean line) 783 kHz 10 kW and Porto Alto 1035 kHz 100 kW, aboutt 20 km NE of the capital. Canidelo was in the past the site for the Emissores do Norte Reunidos. Rádio Renascença I've been at the station Muge site about a week ago, and immediately understood the look it offered meant it was another automated site: a rusty road panel indicating the station and the site name, then closed gates, a broken porch lamp before the smaller gate, too many weeds in and out of the premises... and no fence at all around the several inactive HF rhombics. The only fence I could see was around the houses and the MW tower. This MW site is listed at 100 kW 594 kHz, but usually run at just 60-70 kW, and currently at even less (2 x 10 kW, i.e. the reserve units) as a spare for the main transmitter is being awaited. Muge is about 45 km NE of the capital, and just a few km northwards of the ghost site of Glória do Ribatejo, with all the RL/RFE antennae still up (Carlos Gonçalves, Portugal in an email (11/3-2003), Ydun`s MW News via DXLD) ** ROMANIA. What kind of sloppy work is this? If the on-line data isn't there, how can it have been included in the mailed On Air magazine? What is going on? Every time the schedule changes, you act like it never happened before and you have no idea what to do! This has happened twice or more each year for decades! Surely you could have gotten it right and worked out to a simple routine by now!?!?! I'd appreciate it if you could postal-mail me one of those schedule charts that list all the streams and show the new- schedule programme lineup. You used to send these out and I hope you still do upon request (William Martin, Saint Louis, Missouri, to BBC, cc to DXLD) ** U K. Alan Keith (Filed: 19/03/2003) Alan Keith, who has died aged 94, was the longest-serving disc jockey on British radio; his rich and mellifluous tones could be heard every Sunday evening for 44 years on Radio 2's Your Hundred Best Tunes, bringing a touch of solace and relaxation to the airwaves. The programme, originally entitled The Hundred Best Tunes in the World, was devised by Keith in 1959 and first broadcast in November that year. It was a simple formula; Keith would choose a selection of light classical music from the BBC gramophone library, and introduce each extract in his matchless modulated style, interspersed with small snippets of information. He was contracted for a 13-week run of half- hour shows but the series was so popular that the run was extended and the show became an hour long; it has been on air ever since.... http://news.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2003/03/19/db1902.xml (via Bill Westenhaver, DXLD) ALAN KEITH DIES; BBC'S OLDEST DJ March 19, 2003 LONDON -- Alan Keith, Britain's oldest national radio disc jockey whose broadcasting career spanned 70 years, died Monday after a short illness, the British Broadcasting Corp. said. Glenn, re WWBS, Macon, GA I tried to tune them in on both of the previous two week ends and did not hear them. The signal is never strong in Southern California. Mrs. Josey, the widow was often heard on the air (gh) ** U S A. Hi Glenn, today, while checking the FM band I happened across the voice of Family Radio's Harold Camping on WFRW 88.1 Webster, NY. As has been reported elsewhere, Camping is calling for Christians to leave their churches in order to stand against Satan and be true to the word of God (as uniquely interpreted by Camping). This was my first chance to hear it for myself (I normally avoid almost all so-called "Christian" programming on the radio or TV). I got a bit steamed as I heard Camping outline his position, since I am involved in church life, so I called the network. Before I got more than a sentence of my complaint in, the unidentified person who answered became instantly sympathetic, and said that the station is completely owned by Camping, and that he says whatever he wants, no matter the feedback from listeners and station personnel. He indicated that he continues to attend his own church, in spite of the teaching of his boss. I asked him if he had any feelings of conflict about working for such an owner, and is it not a betrayal to the conserative listeners who had long felt Family Radio to be a good complement to their church life? He explained that he has a mortgage to pay, and cited examples of people who continue to work for despicable organizations because they need the work. I was rather surprised that the person on the phone spoke so freely to a complete stranger (Rev. Jim Renfrew, NY, March 19, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** U S A. WBOH 5920 kHz. BROADCAST BITS --- WOSU-AM airing BBC news Columbus Dispatch, March 20, 2003 BBC overnight news is now available at 8 p.m. weeknights on WOSU (820 AM). The news service replaces jazz programming. "When we began airing jazz two years ago, we labeled it as an experiment, and it has not drawn the audience as we hoped it might," said David Carwile, manager of the WOSU radio stations. "The message came through from many listeners: 'I love the music; I can't listen to it on mono AM with all the static and interference.'" Along with adding the BBC service, WOSU-AM is re-emphasizing its commitment to news and is referring to itself as "NPR 820," a change from "News 820."
